  • BASIC PURPOSE: The Corps Program Assistant supports Corps Officers in planning and managing youth development, outreach, and afterschool programs at Hayward Corps by training volunteers, overseeing tutoring and mentoring, managing budgets, engaging the community, ensuring safety, maintaining communication with stakeholders, preparing educational materials, collecting data, and representing The Salvation Army in various initiatives and community activities.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Direct and Run/Plan weekly and day to day activities of the Hayward Corps youth Drop-in Center five afternoons per week. Help recruit volunteers and keep the computer/tutoring center up to date.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for parents who want to have their children participate in youth programs.
  • Supervision of staff and volunteers according to Salvation Army Protect The Mission (PTM) standards.
  • Recruitment of students for youth program and involvement in Corps visitation and outreach.
  • Preparation of program and promotional materials; communication with parents and schools regarding activities of the program, and transportation all in accordance with PTM guidelines.
  • Collection of all program service fees in accordance with financial procedures and maintain all files.
  • Meet bi-weekly with Officers to review daily activities of the Drop-in Center and programs.
  • Plan, coordinate, teach and implement programs such as: Sunday School, Troops, teen groups, (YPL), Bible Bowl, creative arts and music programs for youth. Encourage Drop In Center participants to become involved.
  • Ensure that attendance is taken, and statistical reporting is done for all youth programs and other areas of your responsibility and by volunteers and program leaders under your supervision.
  • Plan and implement special events involving children including, but not limited to, Family Outreach events, Back to School Drive/Backpack distribution and seasonal/holiday events.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate all aspects of an annual, Day Camp and week-long Vacation Bible School, including planning and implementing of promotional materials, daily crafts, daily activities, daily Bible Lessons, daily snack and lunch menu, as well as volunteer leader recruitment.
  • Stock, organize and maintain ministry supplies throughout the year including food and snacks for programs.
  • Promote, recruit and transport youth to Divisional and Territorial youth events such as Summer Camp, SAY (Salvation Army Youth) Rally, Corps Cadet Retreat, Divisional Youth Retreat, Western Youth Institute (WYI).
  • Attend youth ministry trainings, both Salvation Army and other, as assigned and approved by the Corps Officers/Assistant Officers to stay current on trends, ideas, and education relating to youth ministry.
  • Must be and able to lead chapel for all ages and provide Bible teaching for children in the After School Program.
  • Attend monthly Corps Council and Pastoral Council meetings.
  • Attend all staff meetings and events as required.
  • Assist the Corps Officers in proper training and record keeping in regard to Protecting the Mission child safety training for all volunteers working with minors and vulnerable adults.
  • Assist with the Christmas Kettle program and Angel Tree Program as requested including but not limited to driving, picking up kettles and/or donations, counting money etc.
  • In accordance with your interests and talents other programs may be implemented such as Celebrate Recovery and young adult or young married couple fellowships.
  • Provide support to Corps Officers and staff for daily duties at the Hayward Corps:
  • Assist with daily operations of the Corps as needed.
  • Help fill in and be a representative for the Corps Officers as needed.
  • Work with local Corps leadership, etc. for purposes of planning, scheduling, training etc..
  • Help the team with cleaning and organizing as needed, especially before and after programs.
  • Help with vehicle, building and ground maintenance issues as needed.
  • Help with complete routine inspections of facilities to ensure compliance with inventory, health, safety, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Assist in Capital Campaign and grant writing for programming as needed.
  • Perform other assignments/duties, as directed by Corps Officers.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to speak and write and communicate in the English language at a high and professional level.
  • High degree of maturity and confidentiality.
  • Familiar with the Salvation Corps Youth Programs. Preferable individual is active in the Salvation Army.
  • Excellent organizational skills. Ability to coordinate and manage multiple duties in a business office.
  • Ability to prioritize work use good time management and handling multiple tasks.
  • Ability to assist with all tasks related to Salvation Army youth programs.
  • Be cordial, friendly and professional in carrying out your job responsibilities.
  • Excellent and professional telephone etiquette and presence
  • Interact professionally in all contact with the public and Salvation Army Officers and staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and accurately. Experience with social media and communication skills through social media and dedication to know and follow Salvation Army social media guidelines.
  • Possess maturity and confidentially.
  • Abide by Salvation Army Policies and Procedures and have an acceptance of Salvation Army philosophy and mission.
  • REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, and/or pull objects
  • Ability to reach overhead
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to operate a computer
  • Ability to process written, visual, and/or verbal information
  • Ability to operate basic office
  • Ability to use office equipment including but not limited to staplers, three-hole punch, etc.

Education And Experience Requirements

  • Must have at least a High School diploma or 2 years of college credit.
  • Must have at least two years’ experience in youth ministry and programming.
  • Must demonstrate, articulate, and model a mature sense of faith and call in the ministry of Christian discipleship.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in youth and spiritual development.
  • Be enrolled as a Senior Soldier of The Salvation Army Hayward Corps within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and orally, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible approach to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver License, and ability to drive a Salvation Army vehicle
  • Must be 21 years or older.
  • Complete The Salvation Army vehicle course training.
