Position Description Advertised Job Summary Technical Theatre Coordinator University of South Carolina Upstate STA00331PO25 Spartanburg, SC The HPAC Technical Theatre Coordinator serves under the general supervision of the Chair of the Department of Fine Arts & Communication Studies and in cooperation with the Director of Theatre and the Coordinator of Design, Technology and Production in direct support of the Theatre Program. The HPAC Technical Theatre Coordinator will also work in cooperation with the Special Events office to coordinate and supervise the daily physical functioning of the Performing Arts Center and Studio Theatre. Technical Theatre Coordinator will also be responsible for scheduling the Performing Arts Center for all internal (Theatre, Music, Rental) and External (Rental) events. During the academic year, the Theatre Technical Director will coordinate with the Theatre Box Office. Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience. Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials A good driving record and valid driver's license are required. Preferred Qualifications B.A. in Technical Theatre/Production or a relevant field and 2 years of related experience. General knowledge of digital sound and lighting systems, theatre and scene shop safety, theatre rigging. Proficiency in stage craft techniques: such as carpentry, scenic painting, basic sewing skills, and fly system operation. M.A. or M.F.A. in Theatre Design, Technology and Management proficiency in hang, focus and programming of LED and intelligent light fixtures, live sound mixing, recorded sound playback, general stage and production management. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Demonstrate exceptional organizational, time management, communication and interpersonal skills and able to work effectively with a diverse constituency. Must make independent judgment of situations based departmental and university policies and students' needs, and represent department and university in an appropriate manner to faculty, students, clients, visiting artists, and the public. Evening and Weekend work included. Ability to plan and meet budget for productions and events. Ability to keep accurate written records. Flexible to accommodate unpredictable demands. Able to foster a collaborative environment with all working as a team to successfully complete the production elements required. Working knowledge of industry standard staging techniques, knowledgeable in lighting design and sound production. Knowledge and ability to supervise student employees and volunteers working in studios, ensuring that all tools are used safely, and in accordance with professional standards for theatrical carpentry (wood and metal), scenic painting, theatrical lighting function, stage rigging, health and safety, tools for carpentry and metal work, sound equipment and function. Knowledge and practice of OSHA safety standards to provide training and direction of OSHA safety guidelines. Ability to manage a safe work environment for various functions and levels of experience in set construction and maintenance functions. Able to plan and implement for productions or events. Able to meet deadlines. Sound judgement, initiative and a keen eye for detail. Ability to prioritize and work under stress. Ability to plan and direct student and or temporary workers and volunteers. Create and maintain all technical documents needed and related to the USC Upstate Theatre. Job Duties Job Duty Plans, supervises and assigns work to skilled and semi-skilled crews (primarily students) engaged in a variety of specialized professional theatre trades work; provides guidance and direction in accomplishing work assignments; oversees construction of theatrical sets for USC Upstate Theatre Program within the budget allocation for each production. Additionally, will track and submit student lab and work hours for students on payroll or working on production for credit. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 45 Job Duty Participates in accomplishing work assignments as a skilled craftsperson in multiple trade areas including lights, sound, and projections by providing support for scheduled university events occurring in the Performing Arts Center and Studio Theatre. Hires and assigns student and temporary employees and volunteers as needed and supervises their work. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 25 Job Duty Oversees all load ins, performances, and load outs in the Performing Arts Center and Studio Theatre for safety and organization. Collaborates with outside organizations and vendors to ensure safe operation of the venue. Coordinates with Special Events to ensure all rental contracts are feasible and within the means of the venue's resources. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 10 Job Duty Will meet regularly with the Theatre faculty for seasonal planning and program support. Technical Theatre Coordinator will meet with Theatre faculty to schedule theatre spaces prior to booking any non-departmental events. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 5 Job Duty In coordination with Performing Arts Faculty, assesses and makes recommendations on the repair and routine maintenance of the Performing Arts Center, Studio Theatre, scene shop, costume shop, dressing rooms and relevant theatre storage areas. Recommends procurement of new equipment, materials, and tools for a preventive maintenance/repair program. Additionally, the Technical Theatre Coordinator will meet with Performing Arts faculty to schedule theatre spaces prior to the booking of any non-departmental events. Will meet regularly with the faculty Director of Theatre and/or the faculty Coordinator of Design, Technology, and Production to go over purchasing needs for the scene shop and the theatre facility. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 5 Job Duty During the academic year, the Technical Theatre Coordinator will coordinate with the Theatre Box Office Manager to arrange Front of House support if requested for non-departmental events. During the summer, the Theatre Technical Director will oversee front of house operations for any event in the theatre. This is require cross-training on the ticketing system used by the box office.
