Job Overview:
The Technical Manager plays a critical role in overseeing the transition of formulations from R&D to full-scale production, ensuring adherence to the highest quality standards. This position demands strong technical expertise in the formulation, scale-up, and manufacturing of cosmetic and personal care products. The Technical Manager will work closely with R&D, Operations, and other cross-functional teams to drive innovation, address technical challenges, and deliver compliant, customer-focused products.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the successful transition of formulations from lab-scale to full-scale production, ensuring efficient and consistent scale-up processes. Evaluate the impact of variables such as temperature, cooling rates, mixing speeds, and ingredient addition sequences on chemical reactions and overall product quality. Continuously optimize manufacturing processes to accommodate various equipment capabilities and limitations.
Offer expert guidance on ingredient functionality, product formulation, and process efficiency. Troubleshoot complex technical issues by identifying root causes and implementing innovative, practical solutions. Stay informed on industry trends and emerging technologies to keep product development aligned with market and technological advancements.
Collaborate closely with R&D, Operations, and other internal stakeholders to support new product development and continuous improvement initiatives. Work alongside external partners to integrate diverse insights and enhance innovation. Communicate effectively with clients to resolve technical concerns, provide tailored solutions, and manage expectations.
Provide mentorship and technical leadership to R&D team members, cultivating a collaborative and forward-thinking work environment focused on innovation and excellence.
Ensure all formulations and processes adhere to FDA regulations, cGMP standards, and applicable safety protocols. Create and maintain documentation, including SOPs, technical reports, and compliance records, to support regulatory adherence and continuous improvement.
Oversee multiple projects concurrently, effectively managing resources and priorities to align with business objectives and client timelines. Establish and track project plans, including milestones and deliverables, to ensure successful and timely execution.
Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in cosmetics or personal care formulation, R&D, and scale-up processes.
Proven knowledge of personal care product formulation, including cosmetics and OTC products, from concept to manufacturing.
Expertise in FDA regulations, cGMP standards, and manufacturing best practices.
Strong mathematical and statistical analysis skills for process optimization and problem-solving.
High proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, ERP systems, and the ability to learn in-house programs.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor technical data for diverse audiences.
Experience working in a customer-focused environment, addressing technical challenges, and delivering solutions.
Demonstrated ability to foster collaboration, lead teams, and drive innovation.
Preferred Skills:
Experience in a beauty contract manufacturing environment.
Knowledge of natural and organic ingredient technologies.
Strong foundation in experimental design and statistical modeling for process development.
