Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead and manage design and development projects, with a particular focus New Product Development (NPD) and Sustenance engineering projects. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in plastic and sheet metal design, a strong background in design for manufacturing, and the ability to manage both technical and team leadership aspects. This role requires someone passionate about innovation and eager to drive the development of new products.
Key Responsibilities:
¾ Design and development of mechanical products, including connectors, panels, enclosures, patch cords, wall plates, I/O cables, cable managers, and more.
¾ Create engineering drawings, 3D models, and product specifications for new product development (NPD).
¾ Manage engineering changes, including customer drawing creation, CAD data migration, and product specification updates.
¾ Ensure designs are manufacturable, conducting tolerance analysis and applying GD&T principles.
¾ Design with a focus on plastic injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, and other manufacturing processes.
¾ Oversee and manage project timelines, ensuring NPD meet quality, cost, and delivery goals.
¾ Collaborate with cross-functional teams (supply chain, manufacturing, quality, product management) to meet project objectives.
¾ Regularly report project status to stakeholders, including project timelines and any roadblocks.
¾ Ensure compliance with Lean principles and actively contribute to continuous process improvements.
- Team Leadership & Mentoring:
¾ Based on Supervisor guidance lead a team of 1-3 engineers/GET, providing guidance, technical support, and mentoring.
¾ Manage conflict resolution and foster a collaborative team environment.
¾ Empower the team to take ownership of their roles and deliverables.
- Quality & Risk Management:
¾ Conduct design reviews to ensure that products meet quality standards and are free from defects.
¾ Support risk mitigation strategies and ensure designs adhere to company quality management systems (QMS).
¾ Develop DVP, DFMEAs for new designs or any engineering changes.
¾ Participate in new product research and development activities, applying innovative design solutions to NPD projects.
¾ Work closely with other departments/CFT on the development and commercialization of new products.
¾ Evaluate and integrate new technologies, materials, and manufacturing techniques into product designs.
- Technical Expertise & Tools:
¾ Utilize CAD software (NX UG for 3D modeling, drafting, and sheet metal) for product design.
¾ Hands-on experience with design for injection molds, press tools, and other manufacturing processes.
¾ Manage PDM systems and engineering documentation.
¾ Conduct regular design validation and testing to ensure product performance and manufacturability.
- Additional Responsibilities:
¾ Support other engineers with design reviews, document creation, and technical challenges.
¾ Provide technical training and share knowledge with the team as needed.
¾ Actively engage in cross-functional projects and help drive the completion of company initiatives.
Preferred Skills:
- Industry-Specific Experience:
¾ Prior experience in Plastic and sheet metal design for products like those in our portfolio.
¾ Experience in NPD projects, Developing new and innovative products.
¾ Familiarity with PDM systems and engineering tools.
¾ Understanding of the Quality Management System (QMS) and risk mitigation processes.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications):
¾ Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
¾ Minimum 5-8 years of experience in mechanical design and development
