As an RN Unit Manager, you will carry out our mission to improve the experience of aging together by assuming 24-hour responsibility for directing and coordinating resident/patient care in the assigned nursing unit (approximately 40 to 50 beds) in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations and Keswick's nursing care standards.
What will I do as an RN Unit Manager?
- Direct nursing care provided by registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, geriatric nurse assistants, and others for whom this position is administratively or professionally responsible; hold nursing staff accountable for the care they deliver to patients; review documentation prepared by subordinates for completeness and accuracy daily; ensure that significant changes in resident/patient condition are communicated to the physician, family or responsible party; work collaboratively with other members of the interdisciplinary care team to provide holistic care; follow the facility's communicable diseases, infection control and isolation procedures; ensure that the Infection Control Program is maintained at all times.
- Perform clinical rounds on assigned nursing units and dining room areas daily to assess patient safety and comfort and regulatory compliance and to ensure that nursing staff are performing their work assignments in accordance with established nursing standards.
- Lead the care planning process including initial planning (upon admission), interim planning (clinical status changes), and the required documentation; develop a plan of care based on assessment; update care plans according to changes in resident/patient condition or status; monitor nursing documents daily; ensure that MDS records are complete and current.
- Oversee the resident/patient admission and discharge processes and ensure that all steps have been completed; assist as needed to ensure efficiency and timely completion.
- Participate in "huddles" daily and PRN to review operational and patient care issues; complete 24-hour report daily and submits to the Senior Director of Nursing or Baker Director of Nursing; keep Senior Director of Nursing or Baker Director of Nursing apprised of all relevant information regarding patients and staff; complete the Daily Census.
- Collaborate with the Staff Development Coordinators to ensure appropriate orientation of nursing staff and students on the unit; use incidents as opportunities to coach staff on correct procedures; assess the clinical competencies of staff and addresses opportunities for improvement; provide clinical leadership to unit staff; complete performance evaluations for all unit employees within expected timeframe; may assist in the provision of educational programs for the facility.
- Participate actively in the quality improvement (QI) process by identifying opportunities for process improvement, attending QI focused unit based and facility wide committee meetings; submit required reports; recommend plans for improvements.
- Comply with regulatory and legislative requirements; participate in federal, state and local surveys and inspections as requested; follow established plans of correction; report abuse, neglect or violence according to established procedures; refer complaints from patients, families, or physicians to the Senior Director of Nursing or the Director of Nursing-Baker.
- Ensure the unit's work areas, resident/patient rooms and treatment areas are maintained in a clear and sanitary manner in compliance with regulatory agencies and fire codes; monitor supplies and order refills as needed.
- Oversee staffing assignments, taking into consideration resident/patient safety and the education, experience, knowledge, and ability of the persons being assigned; review and adjust the staffing pattern as needed. Ensure scheduling of lunch and of breaks consistent with resident/patient care needs. Approve the correction of errors in timekeeping records; authorize overtime as necessary. Establish and maintain fiscal practices consistent with cost containment practice and policies developed by the Department of Nursing submits required reports to support variances. Assume the duties of the Director of Nursing as delegated in his/her absence.
What is required in this position?
- Graduation from an accredited registered nurse curriculum is required; Bachelors degree in Nursing preferred.
- Active Registered Nurse licensure without disciplinary infractions by Maryland Board of Nursing.
- Certification in Infection Control preferred.
- Current AHA HCP BLS certification required.
- IV insertion skills required.
- Requires 5 years of prior nursing experience in an acute or long-term care setting including 2 recent years in a supervisory role.
