We’re looking for a senior-level QA professional with a strong technical background and an inquisitive, proactive mindset who can help us create a culture of quality and take ownership of and improve how we do test of our software and hardware solutions.
Reporting to the team’s Software Development Manager, and working closely with our Developers, you will be based in our Sydney office.
Our standard hybrid work schedule is three days per week in the office (Tuesday to Thursday), and up to two days working from home. Most of the testing activities will revolve around software, but you will also be involved with end-to-end integration testing with physical hardware equipment in our test lab.
Description:
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Become an expert on the MST’s hardware products, MST software platform, and the business domain of underground mining
- Develop test plans and build test cases for features, releases and regression test cycles
- Execute manual test cases for bugfixes, features, and regression tests
- Plan and execute integration tests that bring together constellations of custom hardware devices, on-board vehicle touchscreen devices, and web/desktop software applications
- Plan and perform exploratory testing, usability testing, and performance testing, and make recommendations for product improvements
- Collaborate with developers to troubleshoot issues
- Take part in design reviews, with a mindset of encouraging “design for testability” at the earliest stages
- Take part in planning and estimation, both for Scrum sprints, and for larger projects and releases
- Track and report on quality metrics
- Suggest and drive improvements to our QA, development, and delivery processes
- Although our testing activities are largely manual at present, we are working on initiatives to continually improve our QA process maturity and in the future, it is anticipated that you’ll take part in evaluating new automated testing tools or frameworks, and help plan and develop new suites of automated tests
- Help create a culture of quality and doing the job right

Business travel is not planned to be a major part of this role, but there could potentially be occasional opportunities to travel to customer sites or other MST offices, or to attend industry conventions and tradeshows.

Skills and Experiences:
Desired Skills And Experience
- Previous experience in firmware and software QA, with preferably a minimum of 5 years in QA or related technical roles
- A degree or diploma in a relevant technical field is preferred, but we’ll consider equivalent skills, knowledge, and experience
- Hands-on experience with wireless protocol stacks and standards, e.g. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, IEEE 802.15.4 Ultra-Wideband
- Understanding of industrial network protocols (e.g. CAN, Modbus, SPI, USB, UART, Ethernet)
- Strong understanding of wireless PHY/MAC layers, RF signal characteristics, and interference issues
- Experience with network performance testing, including throughput, latency, jitter, and packet loss using tools like: iPerf, Wireshark
- Ability to develop and execute test plans for wireless devices, including testing network protocol compliance, interoperability and coexistence
- Experience testing radio hardware, e.g. using spectrum analyzers, signal generators and oscilloscopes for waveform analysis, Packet Error Rate measurement and validating signal strength
- Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (Robot Framework, PyTest, custom Python scripts, and continuous integration)
- Experience with IoT communication protocols like MQTT and testing of edge computing devices with low power wireless technologies e.g. LoRa and LTE-M
- Experience with testing complex systems of software and hardware devices is desirable
- Strong working knowledge of Linux and the Linux command line
- Any experience with VoIP telephony systems is a plus
- Any experience with databases and SQL is a plus
- A strong ability to communicate and explain things clearly, both verbally and in writing
- An eagerness to learn, and an ability to learn quickly
- A willingness to ask questions, ask for help, and question our assumptions
- A good sense of quality, which includes not just technical correctness but also always thinking about the needs and expectations of the customer and end users in the field
- Any knowledge or experience of the mining industry or a similar industry involving heavy equipment, industrial processes, or fleet management is a plus
- Any experience with process improvement or Quality Management Systems is a plus
