JOB SUMMARY The MCC BC Indigenous Neighbours (IN) Program was started over 30 years ago. The program works to foster the building of trust relationships between Indigenous groups, local churches and community groups. We are called, as a faith community, to acknowledge the need for reconciliation to create a new pathway together. We do this by: understanding the history, challenges, and strengths that we all bring; educating individuals and groups on reconciliation actions using workshops, speaking engagements, publications, and online resources; and facilitating opportunities for MCC supporters and Indigenous partners to build respectful relationships. The Indigenous Neighbours Program Assistant (summer intern) assists the MCC BC Indigenous Neighbours Program Coordinator by developing educational presentations, planning awareness and engagement events, researching, and learning about Indigenous history, updating social media sites, sending out newsletters, promoting the program to churches and community, entering program information into database, and attending online Indigenous events and conferences as required. MISSIONAL COMMITMENT, HOURS, LOCATION & WORKING CONDITIONS Missional commitment: this role requires a demonstrated commitment to: a personal Christian faith; active participation in a Christian church or Christian community; and nonviolent peacemaking. This role commits the employee to working collaboratively to create and maintain an organizational culture that prevents and responds to situations of abuse of power (sexual harassment, child abuse, racism, exploitation, and fraud among other situations). This role participates in prayer times at MCC BC and/or at local churches and faith gatherings, being prepared to answer inquiries about MCC BC’s mission and values. This role contributes to a positive workplace culture based on Christian beliefs and values, while modelling nonviolent peacemaking in the workplace, in the community and the church through respectful interactions with others. This role requires adherence to MCC BC’s Code of Conduct, policies, practices, and procedures, including Workplace Health and Safety. How much you work: this is a summer term, hourly position working 30 hours per week - up to 16 weeks pending on funding under the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Some flexibility is required for special events (evenings and weekends). When you work: this position operates primarily within general office hours of 8:30 – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Requires flexibility to work weekends and evenings. Where you work: this position is located primarily at MCC BC’s Abbotsford head office. On occasion, training and meetings may require travel to other locations within British Columbia. Pace of work: this position will work in a busy office environment, responding to a multitude and variety of requests as they come in and with some project deadlines. Physical conditions & requirements: this position may require up to 50% computer-monitor time and 50% offsite for special events and projects. May require moving objects up to 10 lbs. Interactions with vulnerable populations: this position will have low interactions with vulnerable populations. Key Responsibilities Develop and adapt Indigenous history and cultural presentations in an online format and online activities to engage church groups in the ministry of reconciliation. Plan and assist with a National Indigenous Peoples Day Awareness event held on May 30th-June 1st – a safe, self-guided Walk in the Spirit of Reconciliation, including follow-up on Indigenous contacts and resources identified to enrich participants knowledge. Assist with developing workshops and book studies for IN Program with the potential of co-facilitating. Assist with facilitating the KAIROS Blanket Exercise workshop. Identify community plans/dates for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation events and assist with planning MCC BC events. Update and send out the Indigenous events newsletter for people wanting to know about upcoming events and educational opportunities. Assist with development of IN Program events that bring together Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people. Assist with planning and research for MCC project about historical connections with Indigenous peoples in BC. Overall promotion of the IN Program by engaging churches, education institutions, community groups and local First Nations & Metis groups. Monitoring the MCC Canada IN Network – discussions and issues. Entering IN Program information in database. Start Date 21 May, 2025 - may be adjusted, or until suitable candidate is identified. Term Length 8-16 weeks, subject to Canada Summer Jobs funding. Salary Details . 20.00 per hour Benefits With this hourly, short-term position, benefits include mandatory employer contributions towards CPP, EI, WCB.
