MTRL, pronounced “material” is a furniture design studio comprised of six people focused on creating bespoke commercial furniture that reinforce our clients’ brands within their office. Furniture we design and manufacture can be found in the headquarters of Google, Apple, Netflix, Adobe, LinkedIn, Tik Tok and many others.
Together with the rest of the team you will help us deliver ambitious projects on a regular basis as a Manufacturing and Design Engineer. You will be responsible for the engineering of commercial furniture and managing productions processes. This position will take ideas from the industrial design team and turn them into shipped products based on industry standards. You will be expected to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines, interruptions and changing priorities. You will coordinate sourcing, production and final assembly activities at both external vendors and in-house. The overarching goal of this role is to design high quality products and deliver them on time and within budget.
Essential Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Designing furniture and subcomponents for manufacture in Fusion 360.
- Working with vendors to provide shop drawings, clarify specifications and ensure critical timelines are met.
- Creating detailed drawings according to MTRL’s standards for vendors, project partners and onsite installers
- Sourcing products and components from MTRL’s network of suppliers
- Managing the logistics associated with MTRL’s supply chain
- Utilizing MTRL’s custom business management software, file architecture and naming conventions to document work
- Working with the rest of the MTRL to deliver continuous improvement initiatives across our process
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field or at least 4 years of related engineering experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience designing products in CAD
- Familiarity with tolerancing and GD&T
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, particularly sheet metal fabrication, engineered wood components, welding and 3D printing
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication and teamwork skills and willingness to ask questions
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, Teams, and QuickBooks
- Willingness to travel domestic and international (up to 20%)
Nice to Have Qualifications:
- Experience in sheet metal design
- Experienced in wood working with engineered wood (particle board, MDF, veneer and lumber)
- Experience in releasing technical drawings for sheet metal, welding, wood fabrication or related parts
- In-depth experience with 3D printing slicing software and troubleshooting failed prints
- Knowledge of materials and their properties for design applications.
