Job Summary

The IP Network Operations Engineer 1 is a position of relevant technical experience and is responsible for collaborating with other Network Engineers to maintain, monitor, upgrade, and troubleshoot advanced IP and transport network environments. The IP Network Operations Engineer is largely focused on the support and troubleshooting of the production network including the planning and implementation of network maintenance activities. The IP Network Operations Engineer is considered a “generalist” on the platforms and business units served in addition to having practical knowledge of network principles, routing protocols, layer 2 switching and Quality of Service.

The IP Network Operations Engineer 1 will report directly to the Director of IP Network Operations and Video Services.

There are no direct reports to this position.

The IP Network Operations Engineer 1 will regularly interface with the following departments and outside sources: NOC, Telesystem, Buckeye Broadband, MaxxSouth Broadband Technical staff, Equipment & Software vendors, and Large Enterprise Customers.

Essential Job Functions

The IP Network Operations Engineer 1 is accountable for the following items for the business units served by MaxxSouth Broadband:

  • Collaborating on special projects as assigned by the Director of IP Network Operations and Video Services.
  • Demonstrate a basic level knowledge of fiber technologies, Layer 2 & Layer 3 VPNs, Inter-provider ethernet services, voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructures, and other essential services.
  • Update and maintain appropriate documentation of physical & logical topologies, network specifications and all necessary support and maintenance procedural documents.
  • Maintaining physical data center environments including racking and cabling servers, diagnosing faults, submitting RMA, and replacing hardware.
  • Ensure network-related problems and outages are responded to and resolved in accordance with relevant SLAs "service level agreements.”
  • Research and identify technology opportunities and their application to the business.
  • Develop and enforce network standards and policies across the organization.
  • Apply basic knowledge of network monitoring and other network administration tools.
  • Ensure the security of the company’s facilities against all unsolicited and unauthorized access, including DDoS based attacks.
  • Serve in a support role capacity to internal business units such as Marketing, Product Development, and Customer Service staff on customer IP network issues and capabilities.
  • Work to ensure that technical competencies are kept up to date with industry direction & standards.
  • Acquire and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of all equipment and software employed to deliver IP services.
  • Perform routine maintenance and administrative functions on all company-owned IP-network equipment and transport facilities.
  • Participating in the department’s on-call rotation.
  • Follow and enforce the Company’s policies and procedures, including the EEO guidelines and safety, at all times.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Job Requirements

Educational and Professional Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in IT, Telecommunications, Engineering or related degree and 3 - 5 years of Service Provider IP network technical experience – Highly Preferred
  • Associate degree with a major in IT, WAN/LAN, Telecommunications, Engineering or related technical degree and 5+ years of relevant IP network technical experience. – Required

    • 5 - 7 years of Service Provider IP network operational or design experience in lieu of a degree. – Required -AND-
    • High School Diploma or GED – Required
    • Valid Associate level certification from Cisco or Juniper. – Required
      • Certification must be kept current.


Technical Knowledge Requirements

  • Practical experience installing, securing and troubleshooting Network routers, switches and Firewalls - Required
  • Practical experience with Cisco IOS/XR/XE, NX-OS, or JUNOS – Required
  • Practical experience with Cisco or Juniper hardware – Required
  • Working knowledge and experience with network concepts such as Access Control Lists (ACL), route-maps, NAT, QOS, VRF, ACS and SNMP – Required
  • Working knowledge of industry routing and switching protocols (BGP, OSPF, STP, LLDP, 802.1x, etc.) – Required
  • Working knowledge of Wide Area Network and VPN technologies (MPLS, LDP, RSVP, VPLS, GRE, L2-VPN, L3-VPN) – Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of security and firewall technologies and appliances (IPSEC, ASA, SRX, DDOS, IDS/IPS, WAF, etc.) - Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of advanced networking concepts and protocols (EVPN, SD-WAN, BGP Communities, BIRD, Anycast, VSS, etc.) - Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of VoIP protocols, including SIP, RTP, RTCP, and MGCP – Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of scripting languages (BASH, Python, etc.) - Preferred
  • Basic knowledge of automation technologies (Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, etc.). – Preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Walking, kneeling, standing, stooping, sitting, driving, hearing, talking, vision (close, distant, color, depth perception, adjust focus), and use of hands and fingers. Light lifting of 50 lbs. is occasionally needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The IP Network Operations Engineer 1 is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The regular workdays are Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. These hours may vary to accommodate the needs of the department.
  • The IP Network Operations Engineer 1 works in an automated business office environment with business office equipment, including telephones, personal computers, copy machines, and FAX equipment.
  • The IP Network Operations Engineer 1 is required to drive on the job as needed and is subject to regular MVR checks. He/she must maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record that meets Company standards for an insurable driver at all times. Any time these conditions are not met, he/she must not drive on the job and must immediately report it to his/her supervisor.
