Summary

A fast-growing, well-capitalized company in the renewable energy sector is seeking a highly qualified Controller to lead its accounting and internal control functions. Based in Houston, the organization is actively developing and operating utility-scale renewable power and energy storage assets across the US.


This is a hands-on, high-impact role suited for an experienced accounting professional with deep expertise in the clean energy industry, particularly in project finance and operational asset management. The ideal candidate will play a key role in shaping the financial foundation of a dynamic business in a rapidly evolving sector.


Responsibilities:

  • Build and lead the accounting function, including GL, AP/AR, fixed assets, intercompany eliminations, and monthly closes.
  • Oversee accounting for renewable energy projects from development through commercial operations.
  • Track and manage Construction Work in Progress (CWIP), including EPC contracts and capitalized costs.
  • Implement internal controls and accounting systems to support rapid scale and project complexity.
  • Manage technical accounting policies for revenue recognition under ASC 606, including PPAs, capacity contracts, and trading activity.
  • Support the structuring and accounting of project finance transactions including tax equity, sponsor equity, and debt financing.
  • Monitor regulatory compliance including ITC/PTC credits and coordinate with tax advisors on multi-state filings.
  • Oversee the accounting and reporting for BESS O&M costs, performance-based contracts, and asset depreciation.
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Partner cross-functionally with project development, asset management, and legal teams to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.


Requirements:

  • 8+ years of accounting experience in the energy sector, including at least 3 years in renewable energy, power generation, or energy infrastructure.
  • Deep understanding of Independent Power Producer (IPP) business models and exposure to regulated vs. deregulated markets and ISO/RTO settlements (e.g., CAISO, ERCOT, PJM).
  • Demonstrated experience in project finance accounting, including tax equity structures, debt financing, and sponsor equity.
  • Proficient in tracking CWIP, capitalizing development costs, and accounting for intercompany transactions.
  • Technical expertise in revenue recognition (ASC 606) related to energy contracts including PPAs, capacity contracts, and hedging/derivative instruments.
  • Strong knowledge of energy tax credits (ITC/PTC), Delaware entity structures, and multi-state tax issues.
  • Familiarity with BESS accounting, including spare parts tracking, depreciation schedules, and performance-based contracts.
  • CPA designation required; public accounting background preferred.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, startup, or high-growth environment with a hands-on approach.
