Summary

Overview

Responsible for leading the technical implementation, optimization, and ongoing support of the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system across the healthcare organization. This role oversees the infrastructure, system architecture, interfaces, and technical teams that ensure the seamless functioning of all Epic-related applications. Works closely with IT leadership, clinical departments, and external vendors to ensure the Epic system is aligned with the organization’s operational and clinical needs, while adhering to industry standards and security protocols.

Technical Leadership & Team Management:

  • Lead a team of technical analysts, systems administrators, and integration specialists responsible for the Epic environment, ensuring proper staffing, training, and development.
  • Provide direction and oversight for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Epic systems, including database management, servers, storage, and network infrastructure.
  • Ensure the technical team follows best practices for system security, backup, and disaster recovery procedures.


System Implementation & Optimization:

  • Manage the technical aspects of new Epic module implementations, upgrades, and ongoing system optimizations, ensuring minimal downtime and disruption to operations.
  • Collaborate with Epic analysts and application teams to design, configure, and integrate Epic applications with existing IT systems.
  • Develop technical strategies for integrating Epic with third-party systems, including lab systems, radiology systems, and financial applications.


Infrastructure Management:

  • Oversee the Epic system’s technical architecture, ensuring optimal performance, scalability, and redundancy for high availability.
  • Manage the performance, tuning, and maintenance of Epic databases (e.g., Chronicles) and environments, ensuring they meet both clinical and administrative demands.
  • Coordinate with the IT infrastructure team to manage hardware, network, and virtual environments that support Epic’s operations.


Security & Compliance:

  • Ensure Epic systems adhere to healthcare industry regulations (e.g., HIPAA, HITECH) and internal security policies.
  • Work closely with the Information Security team to manage system access, data protection, and the integrity of patient information stored within Epic systems.
  • Perform regular security audits, vulnerability assessments, and ensure timely patching of Epic-related systems.


Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with clinical and operational stakeholders to understand their technical needs and ensure Epic’s performance supports clinical workflows and business processes.
  • Serve as the technical liaison between the organization and Epic representatives, vendors, and other external partners.
  • Work closely with the project management team to ensure timely delivery of technical components during Epic implementation phases, including go-lives and system upgrades.


Project Management & Strategic Planning:

  • Develop and execute technical project plans for Epic implementations, optimizations, and upgrades, coordinating with cross-functional teams and external consultants.
  • Provide regular status updates to leadership on project progress, risks, and mitigation plans.
  • Participate in long-term IT strategic planning, identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement in the use of Epic systems.


Support & Troubleshooting:

  • Oversee the resolution of complex technical issues related to Epic systems, providing second- or third-level support as necessary.
  • Implement monitoring solutions to proactively detect and address potential performance issues before they impact users.
  • Establish and maintain support processes, ensuring rapid issue resolution and strong communication with clinical teams during critical incidents.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in leading technical teams responsible for Epic infrastructure, integration, and security.
  • Epic certification in one or more modules.
  • Experience with the technical aspects of Epic installations, including database management, system architecture, and hardware configuration.
  • Strong technical leadership and project management skills, with a proven ability to lead complex Epic implementations and upgrades.
  • In-depth knowledge of Epic’s infrastructure components, including databases (Chronicles, SQL), servers, storage, and network environments
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues in a high-pressure environment.
  • Familiarity with healthcare regulations, security standards, and compliance requirements (HIPAA, HITECH).
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across clinical, administrative, and technical teams.
