Summary

Position Summary

The Chief Estimator will lead the estimating department, manage and oversee all estimating functions, and ensure accurate and competitive bids for commercial construction projects. This leadership role requires a strategic thinker with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a deep understanding of market conditions and cost trends in the commercial construction industry.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of detailed and accurate cost estimates for commercial construction projects ranging from $1M to $100M+
  • Oversee and mentor a team of estimators and preconstruction professionals
  • Review project plans, specifications, and contract documents to determine scope of work and required contents of estimates
  • Perform quantity take-offs, develop unit pricing, and evaluate subcontractor/vendor proposals
  • Manage bid strategies, schedules, and deliverables to ensure timely submissions
  • Collaborate with business development, project management, and operations teams during the proposal and preconstruction phases
  • Develop and maintain historical cost data, unit prices, and subcontractor/vendor databases
  • Negotiate and build strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers
  • Participate in value engineering, risk assessments, and scope reviews
  • Stay current with industry trends, construction techniques, and pricing strategies


Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial construction estimating, with at least 5 years in a senior or lead estimator role
  • Proven experience estimating a wide range of commercial project types (e.g., office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, industrial)
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and systems
  • Expertise with estimating software (e.g., ProEst, Sage Estimating, On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, or similar)
  • Exceptional leadership, mentoring, and team management skills
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred (experience may substitute for education)
