Job Title: Assistant Controller

Reports To: ARE VP of Accounting and Financial Reporting, with dotted line to STC President
FLSA Status: EXEMPT
SUMMARY
Responsible for directing and managing the accounting functions, including the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions (managing a staff of approximately five people) of one subsidiary of a public company. Responsible for performing a variety of complex accounting activities and procedures related to the monthly, quarterly and annual close processes. Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of accounting and other records, preparing financial and technical reports and providing analysis to management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage and direct a staff of approximately five people, ranging from accounting manager, accounting staff, one or two accounts payable clerks, and an accounts receivable clerk. Staffing may vary at times as a result of special projects.
Maintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
Manage the accuracy and productivity of accounts payable by ensuring invoices are paid timely and accurately; accounts receivable by ensuring receipts are recorded timely and accurately to customer accounts and reviewing customer collections or working with the billing department as needed; general accounting by ensuring closing deadlines are met. Assist with the maintenance of the accounts payable application (EBE) to ensure appropriate workflow of invoices for approval.
Maintain adherence to accounting processes and procedures to provide accurate reporting of financial information with emphasis on internal controls. Ensure that all accounting related Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls and other policies are followed.
Interact with and gather data for internal and external auditors in completing audits and external tax accountants for tax returns and property tax filings.
Prepare and review various journal entries and account reconciliations, and provide General Ledger support as needed.
Solve problems concerning accounting, answer inquiries and enforce accounting policies.
Perform special projects when assigned.
Assist with the preparation of the annual budget.
Prepare monthly reports for other departments by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends, and present results to management.

Must have strong written and oral communication skills.
Must have strong cost accounting background
Must have strong human relations skills.
Must have the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks at any given time.
Strong computer skills required with the ability to quickly learn new systems. TMW , EBE and Great Plains are plus.
Must be able to follow Service Transport policies and guidelines with regard to acceptable conduct when dealing with fellow managers, employees, and vendors.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required. CPA preferred.
Experience: 5-10 plus years of experience in Accounting. 3-5 years management experience.
