Summary

We're Hiring: AI Specialist – Video Processing (Contract)

Brisbane-based (Remote/Hybrid) | 🕒 6-Month Contract with Possible Extension

We’re seeking an experienced AI Specialist to support the development of a next-generation environmental monitoring solution using artificial intelligence. This is a Brisbane-based contract opportunity focused on real-world video analytics, with the flexibility to work remotely.

About the Role

You’ll be leading the delivery of an AI model to process video footage from boat ramps, detecting and counting recreational boating activity across multiple regional Queensland locations. The cameras operate 24/7 and capture variable lighting and environmental conditions — the model must be trained to handle occlusions, angles, and image inconsistencies to deliver a target accuracy of 95% or higher.

You will work with video from seven remote cameras (1280x720 resolution, up to 30fps), develop a training dataset, and deploy a solution capable of automated detection and accurate timestamping of boat launches and retrievals. The end goal is a model lean enough for deployment on edge devices such as NVIDIA Jetson, with data sent via 4G/5G.

You’ll also provide practical training to government scientists, building their confidence and capability to maintain, retrain, and further develop the AI model.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, and test an object detection and tracking model tailored for outdoor marine video footage
  • Train using real-world datasets with varied lighting, weather, and camera perspectives
  • Deliver an efficient AI model for offline or overnight processing, optimised for lightweight edge deployment
  • Develop and document a training dataset pipeline, model architecture, and performance benchmarking methodology
  • Work alongside fisheries monitoring staff, transferring practical AI knowledge and skills
What We're Looking For:
  • Proven success in developing object detection/tracking models in computer vision projects
  • Strong command of Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, CNNs, CVAT, Faster R-CNN, Deep SORT, and other relevant tools
  • Experience deploying AI models to edge devices or constrained environments (e.g. NVIDIA Jetson)
  • Ability to work independently, hit delivery milestones, and communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Experience in hands-on training, technical mentoring, or capacity building with scientific teams
  • Based in Australia and able to work within the AEST time zone
Why Work With Us:
  • Contribute to a nationally significant environmental initiative
  • Use AI to solve a real-world, measurable problem with broad sustainability impacts
  • Join a high-performing and values-led organisation committed to ethical and inclusive delivery
  • Flexible working environment with a Brisbane-based hub
  • Competitive commercial terms with performance-based incentive bonuses
