Social Worker cover letter example & writing guide

Social workers play a crucial role in the support of communities and the people living in those communities. Along with facing challenges related to social issues, these employees often help families and individuals address financial assistance, housing, and healthcare needs. Social workers can find positions in a variety of locations, including hospitals, schools, nonprofits, and government agencies. Regardless of where you are searching for a new job, writing a cover letter is the first step in crafting the perfect application.

In your cover letter, you should portray your passion for helping others and any relevant experience and qualifications you have. The idea is to show a hiring manager you are the ideal candidate for their open role.

In our cover letter guide and the corresponding social worker cover letter example, we’ll cover what you should include to ensure you can get interviews. Here’s what we will discuss:

  • What should your social worker cover letter include?

  • What can you write in the introduction of the cover letter

  • What information can you give in the body of the cover letter

  • How to write a cover letter closing

What should your social worker cover letter include?

Just as you would with the families and individuals you work with, you want to portray yourself as empathetic, professional, and caring in your cover letter. The letter should be structured so that a hiring manager can easily see your qualifications and achievements. Start with a header with your contact information as well as the contact information of the person you are sending the letter to. If you aren’t certain what their name is, our article on finding the right cover letter salutation can help.

The other elements you will include in your social worker cover letter include an introduction, a body, and a closing. We’ll talk more about the other elements in the following paragraphs.

What can you write in the introduction of your cover letter?

Start your letter with a strong opening by directly mentioning the position and your enthusiasm for the role. This is also a great place to start highlighting your relevant professional experience. Choose your most valuable skill and include it first in your letter.

Once you have the hiring manager’s attention, dive into an important accomplishment you had in a previous role, such as a program you arranged for low-income families or a reference to how you’ve worked with medical facilities to improve the health of the community. Also, if you have any specialized training or certificates that help you be successful in the role, include those in the letter. The most important thing you want to portray in your introduction is your strengths in the social service field.

What should be mentioned in the cover letter body for a social worker vacancy?

The body of your cover letter is where you can further illustrate why you are the perfect candidate for the open social worker role.

An effective approach is to break it into 3 different sections:

  1. Why you. Your cover letter should leave no doubt that you are the perfect candidate for the job. Show off your experience, education, training, and greatest accomplishments. Illustrate how you’ve made a positive impact in previous roles. Your experience in developing personalized care plans, providing or arranging counseling, advocating for your clients’ rights, and working together with other departments is crucial. Your goal here is to give a hiring manager a closer look at your unique selling points. Including this information in your cover letter helps you stand out among other candidates.

  2. Why here. What is it about this particular company that makes you so excited to join their team? Perhaps you love the type of work they do or want to join an industry where you can make a bigger difference. You should show that you have knowledge about the company you are applying to work with and that you are a fit for that company’s existing culture.

  3. Why now. You should also consider why this particular role is the right one for you at this point in your career. How has your experience so far prepared you for this role? If this is the next step you want to take to keep you on your desired career path, feel free to include that note in your cover letter. A hiring manager will appreciate seeing that you have goals in mind when it comes to your career.

Social Worker Cover Letter Body Example

In my current role as Community Service Specialist and Program Coordinator at Summit Community Action, I lead a team of four in arranging for social services for low-income individuals. In the past, I also have worked with individuals in hospitals, nursing homes, and those facing mental health and developmental challenges.

Current and former colleagues know me as one who works tirelessly to help clients achieve their goals. Cordial and compassionate, I am able to establish a strong rapport with my clients from day one–earning their trust while engaging in a spirit of mutual respect and maintaining open lines of communication.

I am well-networked with various social service agencies in helping clients secure appropriate resources and living arrangements. In addition, my education includes current progress towards my master’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies (expected 2024) and a bachelor’s degree in Middle Childhood Education.

How to write a cover letter closing

The final paragraph of your cover letter should leave a hiring manager with no choice but to call you to schedule an interview. It should be brief and only include a sentence or two. Be sure to thank them for their time and close the letter with an opportunity to land an interview.

  • Circle back around. Use the information you’ve already added to the cover letter to remind the hiring manager why you are the perfect fit for the job: “Thanks to my well-networked history of success with various social service agencies, I will be a terrific fit for the [position title] role.”

  • Include a Call to Action. Always conclude the letter with a request for the hiring manager to call you: “I’m excited about the opportunity and look forward to hearing from you to set up an interview.”
