What should your graphic design cover letter include?

Just as you would an advertisement, you should focus on getting your message across when writing your cover letter. Your message here is that you have the best skills for the role you are applying for. You should structure your letter in a professional format that gives a hiring manager an easy way to see your achievements and top skills. It all starts with a header, which you can learn how to write by reading our blog post on spectacular cover letter headers. You’ll also need to include a formal greeting before moving to the introduction. The other items you’ll need in a good cover letter are a body and a closing. These items will be covered in more detail below.

What can you write in the introduction of your cover letter?

Your cover letter’s introduction is the first opportunity you have to start showing your skills as a graphic designer. You should start your introduction by mentioning your top skill or attribute. The introduction should also be customized to fit the role you are applying for. For example, if you have experience in website design, and this is the role you are writing your cover letter for, mention that experience in your introduction.

Another important aspect of your introduction is showing your enthusiasm for both the role and the company itself. A hiring manager will be more excited about your cover letter and resume if they feel you are genuinely excited about their specific role.

Dear Sarah Thompson

My name is Felix Smith  and I have a passion for all aspects of graphic design and website development; this passion is  a defining factor of my career. I am reaching out to express interest in the Graphic Designer position posted on LinkedIn and I would appreciate the opportunity to interview for the role.

What should be mentioned in the cover letter body for a graphic design vacancy?

The body of your graphic design cover letter is where you can really put your skills to work for you. It’s here where you will want to focus on the achievements and skills that make you perfect for this role.

An effective approach is to break it into three different sections:

  1. Why you. What types of skills do you have that make you a valuable graphic designer? Whether your top skills include typography, image editing, layout design, or color theory, you need to include those in your cover letter body. Show a hiring manager why they won’t be happy with another candidate and why you are the right person for the job.

  2. Why here. You should also show why you want to work for this specific company. Are there projects that have inspired you? Do you love the company’s values? Adding these touches to your cover letter shows a hiring manager that you care about the company and are enthusiastic about this specific role.

  3. Why now. Now, think about why this specific role is the right one for your current situation. How does it fit with your career path and where you want to be in the future? You should leave a hiring manager believing they can’t wait for a later date to hire you. They need to hire you right now for this specific role.

How to write a cover letter closing

The final section of your cover letter is the closing. This is the section you will use to seal the deal and land an interview. While short, these couple of sentences need to leave an impact. Here’s what to focus on:

  • Connect the dots. Remind the hiring manager why your skills are perfect for the role: “My recent projects and portfolio show that my expertise in web design and branding make me the ideal candidate for this role.”

  • Include a Call to Action. Ask the hiring manager for the interview: “Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to setting up an interview to discuss my skills further.”
