When you’re applying for jobs in car sales, a cover letter allows you to show a hiring manager your power of persuasion. Craft a cover letter that expresses your passion for car sales, highlights your achievements, and ultimately closes the deal.

In this guide and example, we’ll show you how to write a car sales cover letter that convinces a hiring manager to call for an interview. We’ll go over:

  • What to include in your letter

  • What to write in the introduction

  • How to set yourself apart in the body

  • How to close the letter

What should your car sales cover letter include?

Your cover letter is your sales pitch to a hiring manager. In your letter, make the case for why the dealership should hire you as a salesperson.

Begin your letter with a header that includes your name, your contact information, and the date. Below the header, write a professional greeting that addresses the hiring manager by name. For more tips, read our article on how to address a cover letter.

Your car sales cover letter should also include an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. We’ll go over each part in more detail below.

What can you write in the introduction of your cover letter?

When you’re selling a car, you start a pitch with its most impressive features, like great gas mileage or fancy massage seats. Your cover letter should begin the same way. Describe the qualities or accomplishments that make you an invaluable member of a sales team.

For example, you may discuss your sales record at another dealership or highlight the high customer satisfaction scores you earned. You can also get a hiring manager’s attention with an anecdote describing how you successfully closed a big sale in your last role.

In your introduction, don’t forget to mention your enthusiasm for the role. Discuss your passion for cars or your desire to help people find the right vehicle for their lifestyle. A dealership wants to hire a salesperson who will genuinely enjoy coming to work and meeting with customers.

Dear Mrs. McBride

It is with great interest that I am forwarding my resume for consideration as a Car Salesman with Summit Auto Group. I feel I would be an excellent fit for the role due to my broad-based leadership experience in directing all aspects of automotive industry sales, business development, and advertising activities, as well as my exposure to effectively selling solutions to clients with distinct needs and financial requirements. In addition, my ability to apply my soft skills and business aptitude uniquely equips me with the background, knowledge, and understanding needed to truly succeed in this position.

What should be mentioned in the cover letter body for a car sales position vacancy?

The body of your letter should expand on the skills and experience you can bring to the role. It should explain how you can help the dealership meet its sales goals.

It’s helpful to answer three questions in the body:

  1. Why you? Think about your unique selling proposition (USP) and what makes you stand out from other candidates. As much as possible, highlight measurable accomplishments you’ve had in your career. For example, provide your sales numbers or discuss your customer retention rate. Include details about your relevant experience or training, such as a sales course you completed.

  2. Why here? Tie your experience to the position and explain why you want to work for the company or dealership. Do you have training in a specific vehicle brand? Do you prefer selling new or used cars? Does the dealership have a good reputation in the community? Describe what interests you about the position and why you’d be a good fit.

  3. Why now? Explain why you’re choosing to apply for the job at this point in your career. For example, you may want to gain experience in a bigger market, or you may be looking for a job with opportunities to advance into a management role. Discuss how the job aligns with your goals and how your career path has led you to this role.

How to write a cover letter closing

Just like a sales pitch, your cover letter needs a strong closing. Follow these tips to close the sale:

  • Restate your USP. Briefly summarize your top qualifications and connect them to the job: “I’m eager to bring my automotive knowledge and outstanding sales record to the dealership, helping to achieve its ambitious sales goals.”

  • Write a call to action. Persuade the hiring manager to take the next step with your application: “I look forward to discussing my sales experience and accomplishments with you further at an interview.”
