If you’re looking to construct a great resume with a sound foundation, then you’re reading the right article. General contractors manage all parts of a project (typically related to construction, home building, and renovation), including hiring and supervising subcontractors, acquiring permits, scheduling inspections, and overseeing work. There are all sorts of specialized contractors that do specific trades or tasks like plumbing, electrical, carpentry, fixtures, appliances, flooring, and more.

Why use this general contractor resume example?

Your resume summary or objective statement is like the facade of your structure. It’s the first thing people read on your general contractor resume, so you have to make a good impression right away. Include some of your top qualifications, briefly describe your experience, as well as some of your successful projects. Throw in some additional soft-skill keywords to make your summary well-rounded and more impactful.

Like this example, many good resume templates will have an ‘Areas of Expertise’ section just after the summary. This is where you list your relevant skills. We recommend tailoring your resume to fit the job description you’re applying for. Include skills and keywords that you see on their job posting. Don’t include too many skills on your list because you will need all the space you can spare on your resume for your experience and other information. As with any resume, your general contractor resume should include information about your education, training, certifications, and licenses that pertain to the role you are going for. Typically, a resume will have a separate section towards the end of the document that is called “Education and Professional Development” or “Education, Certifications, and Licenses” or similar. Include all your training courses, specific product knowledge, and professional techniques you have expertise in. As the sample does, you also need to keep this section concise. The degree is kept to two lines, followed by the certifications. Since the role of contractors is very technical and most of the training is on the job, it’s ok to expand that list in this circumstance, as long as it’s still valid. It’s not necessary to list anything that is over ten years old unless it is a major degree or a certification or license that is still valid.

How to write a great general contractor resume

The key to making a general contractor resume that will close the deal is to emphasize your professional successes. It’s not enough to just get the work done, you know that being successful in contracting is about getting jobs completed on time, within budget, and with high quality. 

1. Include examples of projects. Tout the specifics of the success.. Spell out your positive results and use numbers to quantify how you met budgets, deadlines, and other objectives.

2. Use energetic verbs. Contracting is about being active and getting work done, so start all of your statements and achievements with energetic verbs. Don’t bore your potential new boss by using dull or passive terms like responsible for, tasked with, or managed. For example, if you led a project, then use words like coordinated, directed, headed, or oversaw. If you increased efficiency, productivity, sales, or customer satisfaction, then you can use terms like accelerated, advanced, boosted, capitalized, or enhanced.

3. Keep it neat. The overall appearance of your general contractor resume needs to be neat, clean, and easy to look at, just like your construction work. Make sure your resume is easy to scan by both humans and machines. Keep the formatting simple and don’t use a lot of different fonts, colors, or graphics. The first thing to review your resume will most likely be a computerized ATS (applicant tracking system). Most ATS software doesn’t like fancy formatting like lines, tables, and pictures. 4. Pair it with a cover letter. Another way to give your application some additional impact is with a customized cover letter. Your resume and cover letter should flow together and complement each other. You can use your cover letter to highlight your strong skills and add some additional details or accomplishments that you could not get on your resume. Which key skills are relevant for a general contractor resume?

General contracting requires a broad range of skills. You probably have tons of different skills, but you will not be able to list them all on your resume because that will make it too long. When writing your general contractor resume, it is best to look at the job description for the position you are going for and make note of all the skills listed. Use the ones that match your skills.

A general contractor needs a lot of hard (technical and learned abilities) skills related to whatever field of construction they are in. But it is just as important to have a robust set of soft skills for managing people (subcontractors, vendors, laborers) and projects. Make sure your resume has a good mix of hard and soft skills.
