JOB SUMMARY:
The Public History Department of the International African American Museum (IAAM) is seeking a Youth Programs Coordinator to develop, deliver, and support educational programs and projects geared toward family and youth audiences. The individual in this position will manage engaging and creative initiatives for visitors of various ages, knowledge levels, and abilities. Key responsibilities include leading the IAAM's Youth Advisory Council, supporting weekend and weekday youth and family programs, and assisting with execution of departmental public programs. This position also manages a range of administrative duties critical to departmental operations. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator, highly organized, and has exceptional interpersonal skills and flexibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Program Design, Delivery & Evaluation
* Provide complete project management for youth and family programs including creative partner relationship management, tracking goals vs statistics, program scoping, execution, evaluation, etc.
* Serve as project lead and facilitator for youth and family programming.
* Assist in the creation of materials necessary for program execution.
* Respond to public and community inquiries regarding programs and related matters.
* Monitor youth program supplies and inventory; track when ordering is needed to keep inventory up to date.
* Plan and lead the museum Youth Advisory Council.
* Supports the execution of public programs at the IAAM.
* Create and maintain spreadsheets to track spending for programmatic activities.
Administrative Support
* Manage the department's weekly program tracker to ensure consistent updates across initiatives.
* Serve as primary administrator for the Programs inbox: responding to inquiries, logging submissions, and routing information to relevant staff.
* Maintain and update program contact lists for previous attendees, community partners, and outreach leads to support marketing and engagement efforts.
* Assist with drafting and disseminating email communications and outreach for youth and family programs as needed.
FURTHER DUTIES:
* Maintain knowledge of current best practices in youth and family programming.
* Maintain records of youth and family programs and enrollment numbers.
* Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with Learning & Engagement Division, Curatorial, Marketing, and other staff across the museum.
* Maintain strong professional relationships with community institutions, educators, and agencies to develop new opportunities, ensure program relevance, and forge partnerships.
* Attend and support museum special events as needed - including evening and weekend events.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Experience working in museums, cultural organizations, and/or education-centered environments.
* Proficiencies in content creation
* Proficiencies in program creation and management
* Demonstrated experience working with diverse audiences to achieve the highest standards in educationally engaging, culturally relevant, and intellectually stimulating program development and delivery.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* An appreciation for and knowledge of African, African American, Charleston, and Lowcountry history and culture.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced, high energy environment with hybrid and cross-departmental teams.
* Organized, detail-oriented, and ability to manage multiple projects or initiatives simultaneously.
* Command of Zoom and other virtual meeting and conference platforms for programming purposes.
EDUCATION MINIMUM:
* BA is required. Specialization/Knowledge of American Studies, History, Public History, Education, Museum Studies, or Arts Administration is preferred.
* Candidates with equivalent 2+ years of related or specialized field experience may be considered.
Physical Requirements:
* Prolonged periods standing and walking
* Must be able to work in inclement, hot, humid and varied weather conditions.
* Must be able to bend, kneel, squat/stoop to perform tasks.
* Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
