The Marketing and Communications Department at the UBC Sauder School of Business leads initiatives to build the brand and reputation of the school, both in domestic and global markets, and develops marketing and communication strategies to promote business objectives, including recruitment, student experience, fundraising and alumni and community engagement. Key areas of responsibilities include brand stewardship, school and unit level marketing campaigns, corporate communications, and media relations.
The Web Specialist is responsible for designing, coding, and improving UBC Sauder’s web and email-based marketing initiatives and programs in a way that ensures our end users’ needs are continuously met. This role emphasizes a strong focus on user experience and integrates these efforts into the broader web marketing strategy to drive engagement and achieve business objectives.
The Web Specialist is responsible for ensuring that the UBC Sauder’s website and digital assets adhere to brand guidelines and meet marketing and business objectives. Works closely with the marketing and communications team and other UBC Sauder units to develop, manage, maintain and enhance UBC Sauder’s web and email capabilities, and implement the school's digital marketing initiatives.
The Web Specialist monitors the success and effectiveness of UBC Sauder's web strategies and other integrated campaigns, reports on web analytics and campaign metrics, participates in the development of the school's annual marketing and communications plan and supports the unit during major capital projects.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Associate Director, Digital Experience. Liaises and works closely with MarCom team and UBC Sauder program offices; may occasionally liaise with industry contacts and suppliers as needed.
Work Performed
UX Design and Production
Conceptualizes original website design ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to overall experience.
Creates wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps to communicate interaction and design ideas.
Presents and defends designs and key deliverables to peers and business unit stakeholders.
Establishes and promotes design guidelines, best practices, user training documentation and standards.
Monitors and analyzes the user experience of existing applications and works under the guidance of the Web Manager to ensure continuous improvements and enhancements are made with the end users’ needs in mind.
Assists with the occasional design of audio and video content for website usage for all multimedia channels.
Web Development
Develops engaging and responsive web pages that accurately and efficiently leverage the sauder.ubc.ca code base and component structure.
Supports the integration of third-party applications and data into and out of UBC Sauder’s web environments.
Continuously optimizes the UBC Sauder web presence for maximum speed and scalability.
Conducts regular website performance and user testing.
Ensures website functionality and stability across devices e.g., desktop, mobile, tablet.
Works with marketing and communication colleagues to incorporate brand elements and relevant marketing and communication needs into the organization’s web presence.
Provides internal support to marketing team members and business unit partners on web related projects and updates.
Develops and/or validates test routines and schedules to ensure that test cases mimic external interfaces and address all browser and device types.
Maintains an understanding of the latest Web applications and programming practices through education, study, and participation in conferences, workshops, and groups.
Identifies problems uncovered by user feedback and testing and correcting or referring problems to appropriate team members for correction.
Writes well designed, testable, efficient code by using best software development practices.
Creates website layout/user interfaces by using standard HTML/CSS practices.
Gathers and refines specifications and requirements based on end user, business, and technical needs.
Email Marketing Support and Development
Develops and maintains overarching email marketing templates for use with UBC Sauder’s email marketing platform that leverage a standard and consistent code base.
Ensures all email marketing templates are aligned and consistent with the school’s overarching brand guidelines and standards.
Provides training and support for business unit content editors within UBC Sauder’s email marketing platform.
Develops and maintains email marketing guidelines that accurately articulate and support the use of standard templates and approaches.
Ensures all email marketing templates are tested and function consistently across all relevant email clients and devices.
Collaborates with cross-functional teams to integrate email marketing efforts with broader digital marketing strategies.
Implements and manages email automation workflows to enhance user engagement and operational efficiency.
Content Management and Support
Troubleshoots functionality of content, links, forms, registration flows, etc., and makes corrections.
Monitors web content, functionality, design, and performance daily, identifies issues, and facilitates resolution by working with the appropriate web stakeholder(s).
Working with the data strategist, works on the implementation of search engine optimization, search engine marketing initiatives, web analytics reporting and usability testing as required. Increases website viewership continuously by creating new and useful content and employing good SEO practices.
Supports content editors and business units with publishing, maintenance, and coordination of web content for the UBC Sauder School of Business website and related online channels.
Ensures that content is posted in a manner that keeps the site timely and current, and that editing and production delivers a site experience that meets internal and external commitments.
Performs other duties within the guidelines of the position as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Decision-making is based on a thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Marketing and Communications unit and the school. The Web Specialist exercises initiative and judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion and must demonstrate tact and discretion. They work with employees, faculty and students within the school, the business community and external suppliers. Error in the performance of duties or in the exercise of discretion may result in significant damage to the unit's and school's reputation.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and various CMS; knowledge of Drupal is an asset.
- Experience working with web and related technologies with the ability to quickly grasp technical concepts.
- Experience with Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with digital content producers, writers, designers, photographers, technical specialists, system administrators, programmers, etc.
- Knowledge of SEO techniques is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to learn and continually upgrade skills.
- Excellent command of Adobe Creative Suite.
- Must be detail-oriented.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
- Experience working in an environment with mixed project management methodologies with a good understanding of agile principles.
