The Water and Wastewater Department has a key role in maintaining and improving the quality of life for the Citizens of Bastrop. Employees in this class maintain primary responsibility for maintenance and installation tasks for the City's water distribution and wastewater collections systems. Under direct supervision of the Water and Wastewater Foreman, performs maintenance and installation tasks for the City’s water distribution and wastewater collections systems. Operates equipment for installation and construction of water/sewer lines, lift stations, mains, and manholes. Locates problems and performs repairs for leaks, line breaks, faulty components and restores interrupted services. Performs some tasks independently, but generally functions as part of a work crew for City projects of greater complexity and dimension. Performs related work as directed. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs various repairs of distribution and collection systems of the City.Operates various types of vehicles and equipment in the repair and installation of water and wastewater lines.Corrects wastewater stoppages and blockages in mains.Performs water connections and disconnections as directed.Performs various preventive maintenance duties, i.e., flushing wastewater lines, cleaning wet wells and lift stations, cleaning and maintaining vehicles, cleaning and maintaining portable pumps and power equipment.Addresses complaints concerning water pressure, discolored water, and metering.Installs new water and sewer services, meters, taps, new mains, valves fire hydrants and manholes, and changes out existing meters as needed.Follows proper safety protocols as required per work site.Functions on call for responding to emergencies and rotates week day shifts as a relief technician.Attends periodic safety meetings according to department policy.Other Duties: Performs routine facility/plant maintenance duties.Provides assistance in various other utility functions as needed and assists other departments as directed.Performs related work as directed. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Physical Demands, Working Environment and Sensory Requirements: Must be able to lift and carry moderate weight (up to 20 pounds) and to pull, push, or drag moderately heavy (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or more) of materials and supplies. Some tasks involve frequent walking and standing for extended periods of time.Some tasks involve regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces.Must be able to use their eyes, ears, hands, and fingers to perform assigned duties and responsibilities.Some tasks involve frequent operation of vehicles, office, shop or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations. Some tasks involve frequent use of coordination and manipulative skills in performing a variety of tasks with the full range of hand and power tools and shop equipment; or the skilled and complex operation of equipment calling for adherence to exacting standards of depth, grade, dimensions and contours. Requires the ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, and inclement weather (e.g., dirt, dust, pollen, rain, ice, sleet).
