Summary

SUMMARY: This position is mobile, headquartered in NSU’s Hillsborough, NJ office, and supports NSU's Operations by covering the Southern NJ service area. The role provides operations and maintenance support to various wastewater facilities under the supervision of an operations supervisor. As an Operator in Training (OIT), you will gain hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater facilities and be guided in obtaining your wastewater operator license. The OIT will work independently with guidance from senior operators and supervisors, learning how to manage time effectively while completing assigned tasks and ensuring client satisfaction.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist with critical testing of facility operations, such as pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorine, etc., under the guidance of a licensed operator to monitor system condition.
  • Learn to complete Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) in accordance with facility permits, with assistance from the operations team.
  • Perform general preventative maintenance on treatment plant equipment such as blower oil, filter and belt changes and pulling and inspecting submersible pumps, etc. (Further defined below in addendum A)
  • Maintain accurate, legible records of all phases of facility operations, equipment maintenance, and inspections.
  • Assist in preparing monthly written operating reports based on facility operations and maintenance records for clients, employers, or regulatory agencies.
  • Report plant issues, problems, and repairs to the supervisor in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Adhere to EH&S policies and processes and report any safety hazards, ensuring safe operations at all times.
  • Participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation as directed.
  • Participate in discussions about plant operations with supervisors, clients, regulatory personnel, and visitors, under supervision.
  • Collect, log, and submit required samples to laboratories, ensuring accurate documentation and tracking.
  • Operate plants with guidance to meet all regulatory compliance standards.
  • Assist maintenance personnel with equipment removal tasks such as pumps, blowers, motors, and valves, learning the proper procedures.
  • Maintain records for gasoline, mileage, timesheets, expenses, etc., as directed.
  • Work scheduled weekends and occasional holidays for assigned route.
  • Project a positive image to clients, regulatory agencies, engineers, and other operators.
  • Confined Space Entry – Required to complete thorough training provided by NSU, with occasional use in the field.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • No prior wastewater experience required, but 1 year of related experience or technical training is preferred.
  • 40-hour work week: Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:30 pm (30-minute lunch)
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as requested
  • Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
  • Valid NJ Driver’s License
  • Must be willing to obtain a NJ S1 or higher Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license within 12 months of hire. Previous experience or coursework in wastewater treatment is a plus.

  • Occasionally work around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals
  • Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions
  • Occasionally exposed to extreme heat or cold (non-weather)
  • Occasionally exposed to blood borne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noise (examples: metal can manufacturing, large earth-moving equipment)
  • Occasionally exposed to very loud noise (example: jack hammer work)
