Description Of Work
Under direct supervision, the Utility Maintenance Worker performs a variety
of labor-intensive tasks in the construction,
inspection, maintenance, and improvement of municipal potable water and
sewage collection systems for the division
ensuring compliance with local, state, and Federal regulations.

Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the municipal
potable water systems.
Performs heavy manual labor including digging, lifting, and breaking
pavement under varying weather conditions
while exposed to dampness, fumes, odors, dust, biological,
electrical, and mechanical traffic hazards.
Ensures maintenance materials and supplies are stored in a safe and orderly
manner.
Installs, adjusts, and repairs utility access holes, manhole frames and
covers, sewer clean-out boxes, valve box
castings, curb stops, water meter boxes and meter setters; establishes
layout and sets up safety traffic controls
around active work area.
Cuts and repairs several types of pavements: cuts, fits, and lays water
and sewer lines.
Removes utility access hole covers, enters utility access holes and unclogs
stopped sewer lines; installs sewer
clean-outs and connections.
Sets up and operates a confined space entry tripod and safety harness and
associated data recording; performs
atmospheric monitoring of a confined space and prepares confined space entry
permits and files reports.
Completes work in a professional and safe manner utilizing accepted standards
and practices.
Operates heavy machinery, hand tools, power equipment, and vehicles,
including commercial vehicles.
Assists with video inspection and sealing of sanitary sewer lines;
participates in the rehabilitation of wastewater
collection system lines, laterals, and utility access holes.
Assists other Public Works departments with tasks.
Makes main water line tap connections for extension of distribution system and
makes water meter connections of
various size and type, and makes sewer tap connections.
Installs, repairs, and reads water meters, and assists with water
turn-ons and shutoffs.
Place new water meters in inventory by proper identification with meter number
and records meter inventory data.
Installs, tests, repairs, paints, and maintains fire hydrants.
Performs all other work as needed or assigned.
Education And Training
Must have high school diploma or possess a GED.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have a valid Class B or higher co (CDL).
Must obtain Flagger Certification within 6 months of hire.
Must have or be able to obtain Class 1 Wastewater Collection Certification and
Water Distribution
Certification from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
within a year of employment
or the next testing cycle.
Must have at least one (1) year experience in municipal potable water
system and least one (1) year
experience in municipal sewer systems.
Knowledge And Skills
Must be computer literate with Microsoft Office familiarity.
Must submit to and pass a drug screening test upon offer of employment.
Must pass a motor vehicle record review and a driving evaluation upon offer of
employment.
Knowledge of and willingness to comply with all rules and regulations,
including the Employee Handbook,
OSHA Standards, and the Confined Space Program.
Knowledge of safety rules and equipment, including identification of
precautions for and emergency response to
hazardous gases and vapors.
Must have some understanding of general construction practices and be
proficient with various hand tools.
Must be able to comprehend oral and written instructions and communicate in
English orally and in writing.
Must be able to perform mathematical calculations with fractions,
decimals, and percentages in the U.S. and
metric systems.
Ability to work evening, night, weekend, standby shifts, and perform
occasional overtime.
Ability to prioritize and be flexible with priority changes.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
Demonstrate good workmanship in a neat and timely manner while maintaining a
clean and orderly environment.
Must be able to complete work in a professional manner utilizing accepted
standards and practices.
Ability to perform tasks and assist coworkers with minimal supervision.
Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and to formulate work procedures
within the limits of the position to
accomplish assigned tasks.
