About the Job

Peak Energy is seeking a Test Systems Engineer to drive the design, build, and implementation of custom test infrastructure critical to validating the safety, performance, and reliability of our battery energy storage systems. This is a highly hands-on, entrepreneurial role responsible for enabling rapid, cost-effective, and high-quality testing capabilities in-house—spanning everything from thermal chambers and high-current cycling setups to abuse testing arenas and custom DAQ systems.

This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives on inventing creative solutions, applying first principles thinking, and delivering reliable test infrastructure that directly accelerates product validation timelines and reduces vendor dependency.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, build, commissioning, and maintenance of custom test equipment for Peak's energy storage systems, including but not limited to thermal chambers, high voltage & high-current testers, BMS bench testers, and abuse testing setups.
  • Own end-to-end system design including data acquisition, control systems, environmental conditioning, and safety interlocks.
  • Evaluate buy vs. build trade-offs, leveraging creative, resourceful approaches to dramatically reduce test equipment cost and lead time.
  • Build multiplexing and automation systems to increase utilization of limited test assets.
  • Develop complex mechanical test fixtures and jigs for mechanical durability testing
  • Collaborate with test engineering, systems engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure equipment supports evolving product needs, test protocols, and reliability requirements.
  • Support the development of in-house abuse testing capabilities, including site selection and setup, infrastructure development, safety procedures, and data acquisition.
  • Evaluate and improve existing setups—troubleshooting issues, improving data quality, and ensuring reliability under aggressive test conditions.
  • Partner with leadership to identify future test capability needs (e.g., UV, wind, voltage biasing, IP testing), and lead planning and execution.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience designing, building, and operating test equipment or laboratory infrastructure for batteries, automotive, aerospace, or other energy systems.
  • Experience with mechanical design software (preferably Catia or NX), scripting and data processing (preferably Python), and electrical circuit design for controlling power supplies, electronic loads, relays, and other active components.
  • Demonstrated ability to resourcefully design low-cost, fit-for-purpose equipment using off-the-shelf components, in-house fabrication, and vendor integration.
  • Experience working in high-growth startup environments and delivering results under aggressive timelines.
  • Commitment to driving safety and test excellence in fast-paced engineering environments.
  • Passion for renewable energy, sustainability, and driving positive environmental impact through technology innovation.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building reliability or abuse battery test lab equipment and infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with safety standards, regulatory testing protocols (UL 9540/1973, UN 38.3), and high-voltage system safety.
  • Prior experience developing multiplexing systems, automated controls, and custom instrumentation setups.

The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $170,000, with actual pay varying based on work location, experience, and skills. At Peak Energy, we value our employees. Our competitive benefits package includes unlimited PTO, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, a strong 401(k) plan, and equity opportunities.
