Summary

Position Information

Under general supervision, implements, maintains, programs, monitors and troubleshoots wired and wireless network, telecommunications, public safety radio, cybersecurity and electronic security systems for the County; and performs related work as required.

This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill current full-time vacancies in the Washoe County Technology Services department. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of full-time experience providing support for a complex multi-site network system, large multi-campus phone systems, or public safety radio systems OR an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in electrical engineering, computer systems, networking, computer science, cybersecurity or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License Or Certificate

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

For current vacancies in the Enterprise Support Team:

  • Have extensive knowledge and experience in security electronics systems including installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of card access systems, intrusion alarms, panic alarms, security video systems (NVRs, camera management), and server/application integrations. Experience with Genetec is a plus.
  • Have proven experience managing technical projects, including writing specifications, coordinating vendors, and overseeing system implementations.
  • Have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex security, AV system, and networking issues.
  • Have solid understanding of networking, data storage, and audio/visual technologies used in security, conferencing, and broadcasting environments
  • Have excellent communication and documentation skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

For current vacancies in the Radio System division:

  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have excellent customer service skills.
  • Have the ability or willingness to learn to troubleshoot various types of equipment and systems, including:
    • Land Mobile Radio system (familiarity with Harris EDACS system and/or P25 Phase 2 protocol)
    • Microwave radio equipment (Nokia MDR 8000/9000)
    • T1/TDM circuits
    • Battery chargers and rectifiers
    • Security systems for communication shelters (cameras, access control systems, motion detectors)
    • MPLS Network (Nokia 7705 experience preferred)
  • Install, troubleshoot, and manage P25 Radio System for Public Safety.
  • Install and troubleshoot telecommunications system infrastructure.
  • Have the ability to work in extreme environments, including trips in snow cats and helicopters for site access on rare occasions; most winter trips are taken in Polaris with snow tracks.
  • Be comfortable to work in loud and hazardous conditions, such as generator rooms, on batteries and rectifier units, and near RF-operated equipment.
For vacancies in the Customer Enterprise Solutions (CES) Infrastructure Team:

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Have the ability to install, program, manage, and troubleshoot switches, routers, servers, access points, UPSs, and related equipment. Experience with Cisco, Ubiquiti, and SolarWinds is a plus.
  • Have the ability to install, program, manage, and troubleshoot phone handsets, accessories, traditional on-site phones, and VoIP systems.
  • Be able to manage technical projects, including working with end-users, collaborating with interdepartmental teams, coordinating with vendors, completing project documentation, and overseeing system implementations.
  • Possess strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex networking issues.
  • Be proficient in using a ticketing system to assist both technical and non-technical end-users promptly and professionally, using clear verbal and written communication.

Conditions of Employment

The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Non-Supervisory covers the Technology Network Engineer I position.

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

What Happens Next

  • Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will receive an email invitation to take the Professional Level online exam administered remotely; notices will be delivered within 1 week from the closing of the recruitment.

This exam link will tentatively be delivered via email the week of May 27, 2025, and qualified candidates will have a time limit to complete the exam, within 4 calendar days. **You will be notified if you are eligible to transfer an exam score within 1 week following the closing date of the recruitment.

The exam will evaluate your expertise, knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

  • Business Math
  • Interpersonal and Customer Service Skills

Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook, the Department of Human Resources does not administer an exam when there are less than 20 qualified candidates. Once the recruitment has closed, if there are less than 20 qualified candidates, the exam will be waived and all qualifying candidates will be placed on an unranked eligible list which will be referred to the hiring department. If the exam is scheduled to move forward and less than 20 candidates take the exam as determined by the Department of Human Resources, the exam will be waived. Only those candidates who took the exam or have a transfer score will be placed on an unranked eligible list which will be referred to the hiring department.

  • After the exam is completed, you will receive an additional email notifying you of the results. If you pass the examination, you will receive your score and rank. This rank will be used to determine which candidates will be interviewed by departments trying to fill a vacancy.
  • Hiring departments schedule interviews from a list of top scoring candidates. If your name is not sent to the hiring department, it will remain on the list for future opportunities as they become available.
