Technical Operations Manager (Operational Excellence)
THE COMPANY:
STACK INFRASTRUCTURE (STACK) provides digital infrastructure to scale the world’s most innovative companies. We are an award-winning industry leader in building, owning, and operating highly efficient, cost-effective wholesale, colocation, and cloud data centers. Each of our national facilities meet or exceed the highest industry standards in all operational categories of availability, security, connectivity, and physical resilience.
STACK offers the scale and geographic reach that rapidly growing hyperscale and enterprise companies need. The world runs on data. Data runs on STACK.
THE POSITION:
As a key member of STACK’s Critical Operations team, the Technical Operations Manager supports data centers across a STACK region. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and improving portfolio-wide programs that elevate operational readiness, training, and asset management.
You’ll be part of the team that defines and enforces the STACK “Playbook”—standardizing maintenance practices, operational training, safety initiatives, and risk mitigation strategies. This role requires strong cross-functional collaboration, technical fluency in data center infrastructure systems, and the ability to drive consistency and accountability across field teams.
We’re looking for someone who brings experience in critical environments (data centers, power generation, etc.), understands the demands of uptime and reliability, and thrives on building scalable, metric-driven programs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Lead the development and governance of operational programs related to:
- Operator training and technical certification
- Site readiness and emergency response drills
- Maintenance standards and CMMS program health
- Availability, uptime performance, and event response
- Establish and uphold the standard for Change Management and Methods of Procedure (MOPs) by developing, reviewing, and auditing templates and processes for routine and emergency work on critical infrastructure—ensuring consistency, clarity, and risk mitigation across all sites
- Support root cause analyses (RCAs) and incident reviews to identify systemic gaps and preventative actions
- Deliver training and guidance for field personnel across multiple markets
- Assist in troubleshooting and resolving program, process, or system issues that impact productivity or safety
- Partner with peers in Operations, Safety, Engineering, and IT to implement and scale critical operations programs across the STACK portfolio
- Champion a culture of safety-first operations, high performance, and continuous improvement
MUST-HAVE QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3–5 years of experience in data center operations or other mission-critical environments (e.g. power generation, utilities, or industrial facilities)
- Demonstrated experience with electrical and mechanical infrastructure systems—power distribution, UPS, generators, HVAC, fire/life safety systems
- Experience writing, reviewing, or auditing operational procedures (SOPs/MOPs/EOPs)
- Proven ability to lead and manage portfolio-wide operational programs
- Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and/or Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms
- Strong organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Comfortable working independently and managing multiple initiatives simultaneously
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Background in program or project management in a critical infrastructure setting
- Experience delivering field-facing training and certification programs
- Familiarity with incident management, event response coordination, or availability metrics
- Engineering or technical degree (not required)
Location: STACK Data Center Site in Chicago (CHI) or Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW)
Travel: 25%
Eligibility: Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and pass a comprehensive background screening
COMPETENCIES:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience developing and maintaining diverse company-wide relationships.
- Ability to manage portfolio wide programs.
- Ability to handle a multitude of tasks and work well in stressful situations.
- Ability to develop and facilitate department level presentations.
- Ability to maintain and improve safety, maintenance, quality control, and service delivery tools.
- Deliver effective training for a critical operations group.
- Project management.
- Must be a team player.
THIS MIGHT BE RIGHT FOR YOU IF:
- You’re equally comfortable blending technical acumen with strategic program execution
- You enjoy turning best practices into standard practices—and scaling them across multiple locations
- You’re a builder, not just a manager—you seek out weak points in systems and solve them at the root
- You thrive in high-stakes environments and bring calm, clarity, and consistency to your work
