Role Description:
HV Designs team lead position involves planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining HV/EHV high-voltage power systems - Substations, protection and control systems. This includes creating design documents, Drawings, SLDs. Feasibility and Detailed project reports specifying equipment, schedules, and ensuring the safe and reliable operation of these systems. Key responsibilities often include designing, leading project teams, performing system studies through suitable software and collaborating with other engineers and clients.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Engineering & Design Execution
- Lead or contribute to the design of AIS/GIS substations (33 kV to 765 kV), including hybrid and offshore configurations.
- Prepare conceptual and detailed design deliverables such as:
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Protection and control schematics
- Panel layouts and wiring diagrams
- Substation layout and cable routing
- Perform electrical studies including short-circuit, load flow, voltage drop, insulation coordination, earthing, and lightning protection.
- Design SCADA-integrated protection and interlock systems compliant with IEC 61850 and related standards.
2. Technical Documentation & Specifications
- Prepare and review:
- Equipment specifications and data sheets
- Bill of Materials (BOM)
- Cable and conduit schedules
- Engineering reports and calculation documents
- Ensure all deliverables meet international standards (IEC, IEEE, NEC, ENA, SSEN, UKPN, etc.).
3. Coordination & Quality Management
- Interface with clients, internal stakeholders, and external vendors for design reviews, clarifications, and approvals.
- Coordinate across departments (Civil, Structural, Telecom, Transmission Lines) to ensure integrated project execution.
- Monitor project timelines and deliverables, ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and compliance requirements.
4. Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, sharing best practices and technical insights.
- Contribute to the development of design tools, templates, and workflows to improve design efficiency.
- Support proposal development including scope, estimation, and resource planning.
- Participate in internal initiatives, knowledge-sharing sessions, and training programs.
Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, preferably with a specialization in Power Systems, Energy Systems, or a similar discipline.
- Experience: Minimum 10 years of experience in HV/EHV substation engineering and design.
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of protection and control systems, SCADA, and substation automation.
- Familiar with standards such as IEC 61850, 62271, 61439, IEEE, CIGRE, NEMA, NFPA.
- Proficient in engineering tools: ETAP, PSCAD, CYMCAP, AutoCAD, PowerWorld, CDEGS, EPLAN.
- Experience in earthing, lightning protection, cable design, and insulation coordination.
- Software & Tools:
- Strong command of AutoCAD for 2D design; knowledge of BIM is an advantage.
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication, coordination, and leadership abilities.
- Strong problem-solving mindset with a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
- Certifications: Relevant industry certifications in protection and control systems are desirable.
Essential Skills
- Feasibility and detailed design of HV substations (up to 765 kV).
- Overhead Line (OHL) and Underground (UG) cable routing and modification.
- Experience with Solar Power Studies and Point of Connection (PoC)/Point of Supply (PoS) designs.
