Northrop Grumman’s Advanced Weapons Business Unit is looking for a Systems Engineering Manager 1. The ideal candidate is a leader who can perform in a matrix organization to help develop our people, process, and tool as a functional manager as well as contributing technically to programs. In this Systems Engineering Manager 1 role, you will be expected to perform functional management duties in addition to productive (direct charge) work on programs. It is anticipated that given the size of this team, the candidate will spend ~20% of their time in the functional role and ~80% of their time on programs as an individual contributor. This leader must be able to create a culture of well-being, inclusion and engagement that attracts, retains, and enables a high performing workforce.

This position will be located at our Northridge, CA. site

Functional Management responsibilities including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Provide functional leadership to a team of systems engineers with about 10-15 members
  • Coach, counsel, mentor and provide developmental opportunities for employees
  • Collaborate with programs to balance resources (e.g. hire/assign/retain talented systems engineers) based on staffing needs and resolve critical/urgent program/technical issues
  • Perform employee performance management: provide clear assignments to help employees connect their efforts to the bigger picture; promote the professional development of the team by setting clear and attainable goals; award/recognize high performers; coach and motivate lower performers.
  • Develop and manage department budget
  • Develop, manage, and enforce systems engineering integration and test processes, standards, trainings, and tools for value growth and continuous improvement.

Program Execution Responsibilities including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Plan and manage Systems Engineering work scope (technical, cost, schedule, and risk). Actively support program(s) to drive technically sound decisions, design development and requirements, and resolve technical issues to ensure program milestones are met.
  • Provide, manage, and/or lead Systems Engineering support, e.g. system requirements development/analysis and management, functional analysis. and systems trade studies, technical performance measurement definition and tracking, system/subsystems integration, test, and requirements verification activities
  • Support the preparation and presentation of system engineering materials during System Requirements Review, System Functional Review, Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, System Verification Review, Test Readiness Review, and other program reviews as needed.
  • Interface with inter-organizational management and external Customers/Vendors to communicate technical briefing and program status.
  • Support Program Management activities to ensure cost and schedule objectives are met; report program risks, seek opportunities to save cost/reduce schedule, and contribute to a positive and effective work environment.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 5 years of combined technical and management experience, or Master’s Degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 3 years of combined technical and management experience.
  • Experience in at least one of the following Systems Engineering areas: Operations Analysis, Systems Analysis and Designs, Requirements Development and Management, Integration and Test, Verification, Production Operations
  • Experience leading an engineering team or project
  • Experience in training/mentoring/coaching others
  • Have good communication skills
  • Proven leadership skills
  • **Have a current DoD Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior Functional Management Experience
  • Prior Engineering Management Experience
  • Familiar with DOORS or other requirements management tool(s)
  • Familiar with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Experience / knowledge in missile system development
  • Experience in Earn Value Management System (EVMS)
  • A current DoD Secret clearance with a periodic reinvestigation or original adjudication date completed within the last 5 years

Salary Range: $129,900.00 - $194,900.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
