Summary

At Switch Bioworks, we’re on a mission to feed the world sustainably by reducing the need for industrial nitrogen fertilizers. Our technology uses synthetic biology to engineer beneficial soil microbes that replace chemical fertilizers with a green, cost-effective alternative—supporting both farmers and the planet.

We’re a purpose-driven biotech startup backed by science and powered by people who care deeply about real-world impact. Our team currently consists of diverse talent from all over the world, and we believe it’s imperative to continue fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace because together we are more than the sum of our parts. If you’re looking to do meaningful, high-impact work with a collaborative and mission-aligned team, Switch may be the right fit for you.

We seek a passionate and skilled Associate Scientist, Senior Research Assistant, or equivalent with experience in microbial genetic engineering and synthetic biology, especially in non-model, plant-associated bacteria. You will play a key role in developing our next-generation microbial biofertilizers, working in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment. This hands-on lab role has opportunities to influence scientific strategy and product direction as we grow. You’ll be supported by a team that values science, continuous learning, and innovation.

At Switch you will:

  • Design and build genetic circuits in non-model bacteria.
  • Execute and analyze physiological, protein, and biochemical assays.
  • Engineer microbial strains to enhance plant growth-promoting traits.
  • Contribute to experimental planning.
  • Conduct plant colonization and plant growth promotion assays.
  • Present scientific planning and results clearly and effectively to the team.
  • Maintain detailed records and analyze data rigorously.
  • Promote a culture of lab safety.
  • Stay up to date with current literature and help shape scientific strategy.
  • Work both independently and in team settings.

Required qualifications:

  • BS in molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, or a related field with 3+ years of industry experience (title adjusted to experience).
  • Proven experience engineering bacterial chromosomes (≥2 years). Experience engineering non-model or Gram-positive bacteria is a plus.
  • Proficient in aseptic techniques and culturing diverse microorganisms.
  • Experience conducting or supporting plant experiments. Experience running colonization assay and biofertility trials is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and critical thinking.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • US work authorization + ability to work full-time on-site in San Carlos, CA.
  • Comfortable standing for extended periods and handling delicate lab equipment.

You’re a Great Fit If You Are:

  • Self-motivated: You give a damn and push projects forward independently.
  • Accountable: You own your results—successes and failures.
  • Resilient & growth-minded: You embrace challenges and grow from feedback.
  • Purpose-driven: You care about building solutions that will create impact.
  • Collaborative: You work well across teams and want to contribute to a shared mission.
  • Scientifically passionate: You bring curiosity and excitement to your daily work.
  • A strong communicator: You articulate scientific ideas clearly and respectfully in a team setting.
  • Hard-working: You go the extra mile when needed.
