Position Overview:
We are seeking a Sustaining Mechanical Engineer with strong SolidWorks and mechanical design experience to support the development of advanced propulsion systems and spacecraft components. This role will involve both new product development and sustaining engineering, with a focus on making necessary adjustments to in-progress projects to optimize performance, manufacturability, and reliability. The ideal candidate will play a key role in designing, analyzing, testing, and refining mechanical assemblies for spaceflight applications.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks
Perform structural and thermal analyses to ensure the integrity of spaceflight hardware
Generate detailed engineering drawings, GD&T, and documentation for manufacturing
Support sustaining engineering efforts, making design modifications and refinements to ongoing projects as needed
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical and propulsion engineers, to integrate mechanical designs into larger systems
Support prototype fabrication, assembly, and testing to validate designs
Conduct trade studies to optimize designs for performance, weight, and manufacturability
Work with vendors and machinists to source and manufacture precision aerospace components
Ensure designs meet spaceflight requirements, including vacuum compatibility, thermal stability, and structural integrity
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
2+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in the aerospace industry or other high-tech fields
Strong experience in sustaining engineering, including adjusting and improving designs of in-progress projects
Proficiency with SolidWorks, including part and assembly modeling, drawings, and design for manufacturability
Experience with FEA analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation) for structural and thermal evaluations
Familiarity with aerospace hardware considerations, such as materials selection, vibration testing, and thermal management
Experience with NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports) and ECOs (Engineering Change Orders)
Strong vendor experience, particularly in working with aerospace machine shops
Ability to conduct vendor calls and coordinate component sourcing
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Benefits:
Competitive salary
Medical, dental, and vision insurance
Paid vacation and holidays
401(k) retirement plan
Opportunities for professional development and career growth
