Summary

Position Description

This posting will be used to fill a Full-Time, Permanent, Safety Sensitive, Survey Crew Chief position in the Department of Public Works, Engineering Division. This is a technical and supervisory position responsible for land surveying, global positioning system (GPS) surveying and geographic information system (GIS) mapping support in the Survey Section of the Bureau of Engineering.

This is a safety-sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to random controlled dangerous substance (CDS) testing.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility as crew chief of a field survey team. Work includes supervising and directing the activities of a survey field crew engaged in land, utility, right-of-way, construction, topographic and/or GPS surveying and GIS mapping data collection. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of a supervisor who makes general assignments and inspects work to ensure that it is conducted in accordance with instructions and in conformance with accepted engineering standards.

Examples Of Duties And Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Supervises a field crew of subordinates engaged in land and GPS surveying activities.

Records field data in a field book or electronic data collector, performs mathematical computations and the reduction of survey notes.

Directs all aspects of fieldwork from start to finish of job.

Trains and oversees subordinates in the areas of land surveying and GPS surveying.

Evaluates and documents the performance of assigned personnel.Documents, counsels and disciplines subordinates.

Carries tools and equipment to and from job sites.

Clears survey sight lines with a ditch bank blade or other cutting tool(s).

Operates a magnetic locator to determine the location of property markers, monument and survey control points.

Prepares cut sheets in accordance with construction plans and/or other specifications.

Prepares routine records and reports as required.

Sets up work zone traffic signs and other work zone controls.

Assists with the presentation of programs and projects and performs equipment demonstrations.

Operates a survey vehicle.

Provides assistance and performs duties as assigned during storm events or emergencies.

Performs related work as required.

POSITIONS IN THIS CLASS OF WORK ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB FUNCTIONS OUTDOORS THE YEAR ROUND AND IN ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS, OPERATE VARIOUS TYPES OF SURVEYING INSTRUMENTS AND GPS EQUIPMENT, TRAVEL ON FOOT OVER LAND FOR LONG DISTANCES, OVER ALL TYPES OF TERRAIN (STEEP SLOPES, MARSHY AREAS, THICK BRUSH, CONSTRUCTION SITES AND ALONG ROADWAYS), STAND IN PLACE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME, CUT TREES AND BRUSH, CARRY SURVEY EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES WEIGHING UP TO 80 POUNDS, DRIVE IRON BARS, WOODEN HUBS AND WOODEN STAKES, AND OPEN MANHOLES.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and fundamentals of land surveying and the State Minimum Standards of Practice for Surveying.

Considerable knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry.Knowledge of the practical and safe operations of surveying instruments, GPS equipment and other related tools and equipment.

Knowledge of basic computer operations.Ability to make complex mathematical computations with the use of a scientific calculator.Ability to work from complex engineering and construction plans, recorded subdivision plats, survey plats, plans, sketches and deed descriptions.

Ability to plan and sequence all work required to accomplish assigned task.Ability to instruct, oversee and evaluate the work of subordinates.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, peers, other employees, and the public.

Ability to engage in fieldwork for extended periods, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

Ability to travel on foot for long distances over all types of terrain.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.Ability to perform duties in all types of weather conditions.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or vocational school, supplemented by course work in land surveying, global positioning system (GPS) surveying, or related subjects; two (2) or more years of experience in boundary, right-of-way, easement, construction, topographic and as-built surveying and field operations; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
