Position Summary
The Art Frames Cut and Joint Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the frame cutting and joining department. This role ensures the timely and accurate production of custom art frames while upholding the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. The supervisor leads a team of technicians, coordinates production workflows, maintains equipment readiness, and enforces compliance with safety protocols. This hands-on leadership role plays a key part in driving continuous improvement, minimizing material waste, and ensuring that all frame products meet client and company specifications.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Supervision & Team Leadership
Supervise daily activities of frame cutting and jointing staff.
Assign work orders and monitor employee performance for efficiency and quality.
Train new employees on equipment use, safety procedures, and quality standards.
Conduct regular team meetings to communicate goals, changes, or safety updates.
Coordinate workflow to ensure timely and accurate completion of custom frame orders.
Review job tickets and cut lists to confirm measurements and specifications.
Ensure equipment is properly set up and maintained for cutting, joining, and finishing.
Monitor material usage and minimize waste.
Inspect cut and joined frames for precision, durability, and visual consistency.
Identify and correct defects or rework items that do not meet quality standards.
Maintain high standards of craftsmanship consistent with client and company expectations.
- Equipment & Safety Compliance
Oversee the safe operation of all cutting and jointing machinery (e.g., miter saws, Underpinners)
Implement and enforce Lockout/Tagout procedures and OSHA safety standards.
Schedule and coordinate routine maintenance or repairs on equipment.
- Inventory and Materials Management
Coordinate with inventory staff to ensure sufficient supply of moldings, glue, V-nails, and other materials.
Report shortages, damaged stock, or material discrepancies to procurement.
Identify opportunities to streamline operations or reduce defects.
Collaborate with management to implement process improvements and productivity goals.
- Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate records of production output, downtime, and quality issues.
Submit daily or weekly reports to the Production or Operations Manager.
Document any incidents or safety violations per company protocol.
Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Technical or vocational training in woodworking or machine operation is preferred.
Experience
Minimum 3–5 years of experience in wood frame cutting and jointing operations.
At least 1–2 years of supervisory experience in a production or manufacturing setting.
Hands-on experience with Underpinners, Mitre saws, joiners, and framing equipment.
Technical Skills
Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings and cut sheets.
Strong understanding of wood types, grain direction, and finishing quality.
Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations, especially around machine operation and lockout/tagout procedures.
Leadership & Management
Ability to supervise and train a team of frame cutters and joiners.
Skilled in delegating tasks, monitoring productivity, and maintaining workflow.
Capable of performing quality control checks and maintaining high aesthetic standards.
Soft Skills
Strong attention to detail.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work under pressure and meet production deadlines.
Preferred Certifications (optional But Advantageous)
OSHA 10 or 30-Hour Safety Certification
Forklift Certification (if material handling is part of the job)
CPR/First Aid (for team safety awareness)
