Substitute Teacher Job Description
The Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing effective instruction to students in the absence of the regular classroom teacher, ensuring a high-quality learning environment, and supporting the academic, social, and ethical development of students. The Substitute Teacher will implement pre-planned lessons, maintain classroom routines and discipline, and collaborate with staff, students, and parents to achieve the goals outlined in the Prospect Ridge Academy Mission.
Key Responsibilities
Implement effective lesson plans in the absence of the regular instructor.
Maintain a positive and organized learning environment, meeting the needs of all students.
Take attendance and ensure all lesson plans and instructions are followed.
Be familiar with classroom safety procedures, including fire exits, safety maps, and emergency protocols (e.g., fire drills, tornado drills, lockdowns).
Promote critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and independent learning among students.
Resolve issues or conflicts that may arise with students, parents, or staff in a professional manner.
Foster a culture of accountability among students.
Ensure classroom organization and professionalism at all times.
Show empathy and understanding when addressing student needs.
Maintain confidentiality in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Demonstrate adaptability, good judgment, and professionalism in all interactions.
Fulfill all responsibilities of the regular teacher, including planning and duty time.
Utilize effective classroom management techniques and build positive student-teacher relationships.
Be proficient with instructional technology and maintain familiarity with classroom tools and platforms.
Follow Prospect Ridge Academy policies, as well as district and state mandates, ensuring consistency across the school environment.
Create and maintain a safe and engaging learning atmosphere for all students.
Supervise students effectively, ensuring safety at all times.
Adhere to school board policies, state regulations, and relevant statutes.
Accurately complete all required records and documentation as per school policy.
Leave clear, detailed notes for the regular teacher, outlining any student issues or concerns.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
Teaching or Substitute Certification required. If you are not currently certified and would like to apply for a substitute teaching license, please visit the Colorado Department of Education website.
Strong interpersonal, conflict management, and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
Resourceful in generating solutions to challenges that arise in the classroom.

Ability to read and interpret various documents such as rules, policies, agreements, rubrics, and assessments.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions and execute them effectively.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to apply sound judgment and decision-making in diverse situations.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.
Required vision capabilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustments.
Ability to assist in other areas and adapt to dynamic work environments.
Occasional outdoor work with exposure to extreme temperatures.
Flexibility in work hours may be required.
