The Substation Design Engineer works in the Station Division developing high-voltage substation engineering design for electric utility clients. The position involves detailed design of new substations, renovations, and site expansions for high voltage projects up to 345kV.
Duties
Duties include assisting in the preparation of engineering deliverables for electric substation projects such as:
Initial layout of new substation sites including site plan feasibility
Electrical one-line drawings, detailed physical layouts, and construction drawings
Switchgear, bus work, recloser, and circuit breaker upgrades and replacement
Layout of equipment and steel structures
Equipment and material selection and specification and preparation of cost estimates and bills of material
Conduit and grounding placement
Control cable and wiring diagrams
Relay panel design, wiring, settings and replacement
Protective relay settings (SEL, ABB)
Control building design including AC and DC panels, batteries and charger
Fence and gate design including grounding
Bid and construction contract documents
Observation and inspection
Load/system, coordination and arc-flash studies
Grounding system design
Substation Protection & Control system design
Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) upgrades and additions
Application of basic engineering principles, specifications, policies, and procedures in the field.
Under supervision, the Substation Design Engineer:
Conducts assigned project work and coordinates with team members to ensure compliance with project schedules.
Makes design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications for utility substations.
Performs calculations using engineering formulas and skills involved in the resolution of design problems, including performing field investigation or observation and detailed quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) review of design calculations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required, substation or power specific program and cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 preferred. ABET accredited program or equivalent required.
Eligibility to take Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or obtain EIT within 1 year.
0-3 years of engineering experience.
Familiarity with AutoCAD.
Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point).
Authorization to work permanently in the US.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; fluent in the English language.
Ability to work closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate overall design package and requirements.
Desired Qualifications
PE License, Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or Master’s Degree preferred.
Experience in the energy industry or with an engineering consulting firm an employee, coop student, summer student, or intern.
Prior experience working with electrical power substation design and performing substation studies.
Knowledge of substation protection and control schemes, basic relay settings, and substation construction standards and methods.
Knowledge of Engineering Standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.
Knowledge of Rural Utilities Service (RUS) design guide.
Understanding of basic principles of project management.
