Summary
Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work (SSW) is hiring for the position of Student Success Advisor. This position will work closely with the Director of Advising & Retention, program directors, faculty and staff to foster an increasing sense of responsibility and empowerment for students as they progress towards successful completion of their program. This position will provide advising and support to current social work students throughout their development as social work professionals; assist with orientations and admissions outreach activities, and promote student engagement.
Typical Duties
- Advising (75% of time): Evaluate and proactively address student strengths and challenges related to professional development as a social worker (academic, administrative, personal). Refer students to appropriate academic and non-academic resources services at the school and university. Advise, assist and monitor current students, individually and in groups in academic areas such as, navigating school and university general policies and procedures, time management, study strategies, degree requirements, educational policies, educational plans, course selection/registration, internship requirements, transfer information, and post-graduation options. Advise and assist current students individually and in groups in areas related to social integration such as residential life, community engagement opportunities and strategies for school/work/life balance. Coordinate initiatives and increase number of contacts with current student advise-es to facilitate school and university level retention strategies. Maintain current and accurate documentation of advising communication and information. Communicate student advising issues and updates appropriately with relevant faculty, program directors, and administrators.
- Recruitment and Engagement Efforts (5% of time): Assist with facilitation of strategic recruitment efforts (such as campus, regional and virtual informational sessions, open houses, grad fairs and yield events), new and continuing student orientation, and engagement efforts via social media and in-person related to prospective and recently admitted MSW students and current MSW students to ensure an engaging and productive transition into their program and college experience; support an increase number of contacts with prospective students to support school and university level strategic enrollment management initiatives.
- Collaborative Student Success Efforts (15% of time): Contribute support to identified target populations and/or Student Success initiatives; Actively participate in Student Success team meeting; Be an expert resource to student needs and concerns by actively engaging and liaising with university-wide resources, such as Records and Registration, Financial Aid, Enrollment Services, Housing, Career Center, University Counseling; serve on various school and university-wide committees as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned (5% of time)
Salary: $48,000 - $53, 000 or commensurate with experience

Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in college admissions, academic advising, academic and/or student affairs preferred
- Master’s Degree in Social Work, Education, Guidance, Counseling or a related field or equivalent experience
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to exercise diplomacy, tact, flexibility, and empathy when interacting with students, faculty, and staff
- Working knowledge of social work education, student development and learning theory, FERPA.
- Strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking
- Ability to work collaboratively
- Detail-oriented event coordination
- Networking and relationship building with community partners
- Demonstrated ability in working with, interpreting, communicating, and implementing complex policies and procedures.
- Evidence of working independently and exercising initiative
- Ability to thrive in high-paced, high-volume environments
- Excellent knowledge of computer software including Word, Power Point, Excel, Canvas, and various communication technologies including Google Apps, Zoom, Skype and social media
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to a diverse population of faculty, students, staff and community partners
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
