Summary

include, but are not limited to, the following: * Based on knowledge and experience, provides academic coaching and student success advising for an assigned caseload of students with complex or sensitive situations, including students who encounter multiple barriers to their success, students who are on academic probation, reinstated after disqualification, identified via an Early Alert process, or referred by other advisors. Adapts approaches to the specific situation, and develops recommendations and referrals to support each student's holistic wellness and academic success. Meets with students during evening hours to accommodate working students. * Provides and coordinates group workshops and individual consultation on topics such as academic policies, GPA improvement strategies, time management, resilience, cultural wealth, and study skills. In individual and group settings, helps students identify challenges, evaluate their situation realistically, evaluate past challenges, and think through the implications of alternative actions. Helps students develop action plans to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. * Monitors and responds to Early Alert notices submitted by faculty by reaching out to students to schedule initial meeting and notifying faculty of action taken. Participates in CARE Team meetings and reaches out to students needing additional support. Collaborates with and provides referrals to other offices on campus such as such as Personal Growth and Counseling Center, Student Disability and Accommodation Center, Cooperative Learning Center, College Support Programs, Center for Experiential Learning, Academic Advising, Residential Life, other student success or affinity and mentoring programs, and/or International Programs to ensure delivery of high-quality, comprehensive student support services and strategic interventions that represent integrative responses to complex student challenges. * Maintains detailed case notes for each student in the secure online advising platform, including referrals to other offices. * Contributes to the development of strategic outreach and interventions for at-risk students, and communicates at least monthly with assigned caseload of students who are not in good academic standing to provide support and share information. Analyzes and recommends changes in policy and practice to ensure delivery of high-quality comprehensive student success services. Participate in appropriate committees that help enhance student success. Coordinate and participate in the Academic Disqualification Appeals process. Attends campus events such as Orientations and Admitted Transfer Day to support the Center for Advising & Student Success. Other Functions: * Performs other duties and special projects as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‐related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling. Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A master's degree in a related field (e.g. counseling, college student personnel, higher education, human development, etc.) with at least two years of experience in student success and retention services. Working knowledge and understanding of: Title V, E.O. 595, 665, 405, and CSUMB Admissions and Financial Aid policies; best practices and strategies currently used in academic advising to improve access and retention of under-represented, first-generation students; federal, state, and university policies and regulations pertaining to academic achievement. Experience: leading academic success workshops, collecting, compiling, and evaluating academic transcripts and providing sound oral and written recommendations; planning a student's academic pathway, work assignments; developing intervention strategies for at-risk students; recommending and implementing long-range program improvements. Experience working with diverse populations in an academic setting. Initiative and resourcefulness. Experience with PeopleSoft or other student information systems; email programs such Google mail, and Microsoft Professional Suite-especially PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB's Vision. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.
