Summary

Brompton has a renowned design that over the last 40 years has become recognised and respected around the world. We are now applying the latest engineering techniques, materials, and advanced manufacturing methods to build new products to continue our success into the next decades.

Brompton is seeking an outstanding experienced mechanical engineer to join our structural engineering team.

Reporting to the Lead Structural Engineer, the successful candidate will use their expertise in engineering science and simulation tools to deliver outstanding engineering outcomes.

You will be responsible both for the development of innovative and highly optimised structural components and for supporting development teams across the business on their parts and projects.

You will be a driver of engineering excellence by developing internal processes, maintaining technical documentation, including analysis reports, design guidelines, and best practices specific to bicycle structural analysis, and by providing technical guidance to junior team members.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Structural Engineer you will be responsible for supporting projects through the full development cycle and for developing the team’s competence.

This could include:

  • All aspects of FE modelling – meshing, model setup, debugging, results interpretation and FE Analysis of components and components under development
  • Design exploration to determine guidance for the Design Engineering team
  • Correlation activities to ensure agreement between the FEA and physical test results
  • Developing material models to capture non-linear and fatigue behaviour
  • Providing guidance to the design teams

Who you are:

  • Highly motivated, a self-starter, and a self-learner
  • Strong attention to detail
  • An interest in cycling and a passion for creating truly useful products that improve people’s lives
  • An individual who can effectively communicate technical information to customers at all levels of the business

Skills:

  • Excellent engineering science fundamentals; stress-strain, fatigue-life estimation.
  • Good understanding of material characteristics of metallics, composites and engineering plastics
  • Experience in the use of FEA; being able to perform linear and non-linear structural analysis. This includes model creation, running/debugging and result interpretation.
  • Experience in correlating FEA results with lab tests data
  • The ability to interpret FE results and produce concise, high-quality technical reports
  • Familiarity with the Altair HyperWorks tools (HyperMesh, HyperView, OptiStruct, RADIOSS);
  • The ability to perform hand-calculations to support component sizing and backup FE results
  • Experience of developing around and optimising for manufacturing techniques:
    • Machining
    • Casting
    • Forging
    • Welding and brazing
    • Surface treatment
    • Heat treatment
    • Bolted joints
    • Adhesive joints
Advantageous Skills:

  • Experience in CAD, preferably Solidworks
  • Setup and interpretation of topology optimisation studies in Optistruct
  • Creating accurate load cases from instrumented products: gathering, processing, and using primary load data
  • Strong understanding of relevant industry standards and regulations for bicycle design and performance, such as ISO 4210, EN 14766, or equivalent
  • An understanding of the simulation of manufacturing/forming processes

You might not tick all the boxes, and that’s okay, we still encourage you to apply. Here at Brompton we are always looking for people that share the same values and attitudes as we do, as we continue to build diverse teams and a sense of community which is made stronger by each new individual who joins.
