The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and maintaining medical instruments and equipment used in patient care. This role ensures that all surgical tools meet the highest standards of hygiene and are ready for use in surgeries and other medical procedures. The Sterile Processing Technician works closely with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a safe and sterile environment.
Essential Functions
Decontamination of Surgical Instruments: Clean, disinfect, and sterilize reusable medical instruments and equipment using various sterilization methods (autoclaves, gas sterilizers, chemical solutions, etc.).
Inspection of Instruments: Carefully inspect all instruments for damage or wear, ensuring proper function and safe usage.
Instrument Assembly: Assemble and organize instrument trays for various surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary tools are present and functioning.
Quality Control: Perform regular testing of sterilization equipment and processes to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
Inventory Management: Monitor and maintain inventory levels of sterile supplies and ensure proper storage of sterile instruments.
Record Keeping: Document sterilization cycles, maintenance records, and inventory logs accurately and thoroughly.
Adherence to Protocols: Follow strict infection control protocols and OSHA regulations to prevent cross-contamination and ensure a safe environment.
Collaboration: Work closely with surgeons, nurses, and other staff to ensure that required instruments are available and ready for use.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform basic maintenance on sterilization equipment and troubleshoot any malfunctions.
EDUCATION
High School Diploma /GED or equivalent
Certification in sterile processing (such as CBSPD or IAHCSMM certification) preferred or required depending on facility policy.
Experience
Previous experience in sterile processing or a related healthcare field is an asset.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of infection control practices and sterilization methods.
Ability to operate sterilization equipment and follow safety protocols
