Job Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Surgical Vision Supplier Engineering, the Staff Engineer will lead projects and activities in support of the needs of the global Surgical Vision supply chain, consisting of External Manufacturers and by extension to their sub-tier suppliers, involving both disposable and capital products. The Engineer will possess a high degree of process validation competency and project management skills to successfully lead their assigned projects and extended cross-functional team members in pursuit of objectives related to quality, delivery, cost, and design (e.g. changes, NPI introductions, etc.). The Engineer will possess significant leadership skills enabling them to successfully connect to cross-functional peers on and off-site and across the breadth of the JJV organization in pursuit of the Supplier Engineering functional goals and priorities. The Engineer is responsible for all normal and expected elements of leading a project including: establishment of milestones and timelines and delivery against them, engagement and leadership of supporting project resources, project budget management, business policy compliance (e.g. EHS&S, etc.), and other generally expected project leadership activities.
Essential Skills / Responsibilities
* Participates in the business cross-functional supplier relationship team (SRT) process that prioritizes projects across quality, delivery, and cost, assigns cross-functional resources for execution, and provides updates on assigned projects against commitments.
* Leads and/or participates in a wide range of technical projects (from the moderately large and complex to smaller activities and tasks) directly and/or through suppliers, utilizing appropriate Project Management / FPx tools and Six Sigma / Process Excellence tools.
* Provides guidance and direction to more junior engineers; and integrates and manages contracted and other resources. Delivers, through cross-functional coordination, not only the direct technical project activities but also all related regulatory, clinical, marketing, and other actions required to bring the project to market (e.g. a strong end-to-end mindset).
* Leads and/or participates in moderately complex quality events and failure investigations involving finished goods and raw material suppliers, engaging the appropriate cross-functional resources and subject matter expertise as required, to identify root cause and implement corrective action. Communicates updates and progress and escalates appropriately.
* Provides guidance and input to leadership as it relates to the ability of suppliers to maintain adequate capacity to support the demand forecast. Anticipates future constraints and raises, gains approval, and executes activities in advance of any constraints to ensure continuity of supply to customers.
* Employs their knowledge of assembly processes and techniques, LEAN/Six Sigma tools, and other engineering techniques to constantly identify, raise, gain approval, and execute, in collaboration with external and internal partners
* Leads and/or participates in design changes to existing components and sub-assemblies, in partnership with appropriate design resources supporting lifecycle activities. Partners with R&D to delivery new product introductions, with attention to DFM/A, V&V activities, and pFMEA's/control plans, ensuring the receipt of a stable and capable process into sustaining engineering for ongoing lifecycle technical support.
* Leads and/or participates in finished goods and raw material projects across multiple manufacturing sites beyond Ext. Mfg.'s (e.g. sub-tier suppliers, other J&J EM's, etc.) where common supply streams exist, leveraging resources, skill sets, and ensuring alignment to the larger finished goods and raw material strategy and goals. Capable of engaging with cross-functional resources remotely and across time zones, cultures, and functions to deliver project objectives.
* Cultivates deep and meaningful relationships with suppliers and with key cross-functional partners including peers in Procurement, Supplier Quality, PLAN, and design, as well as a wide array of extended partners (e.g. product quality, R&D, regulatory, etc.) to deliver results and solutions, manage risks, and react to issues.
* Maintains and expands personal technical knowledge and skills across multiple process, materials, engineering technologies, and manufacturing techniques, for both mechanical and electro-mechanical products, to successfully lead a wide array of technical projects and activities.
* Manages the budget for all assigned projects from need identification and justification, through aCAR generation and approval, asset delivery, asset installation & V&V, supplier payment, documentation closeout, and capture of any related savings.
* Maintains relationships with other cross-functional engineers and scientists as well as other JJV functions to engage subject matter expertise on assigned projects as required. Represents a strong technical voice to the suppliers and within production environment in support of the Technical Operations Director. Comfortable working across a matrix environment, using influencing and collaboration to drive results.
* Ensures the direct manager is appraised of all critical finished goods and raw material activities, initiatives, and actions, especially those that may impair production operations, and ensures that the team goals are aligned to both functional and plant or Value Stream priorities.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a technical discipline is required. (B.S. in Mechanical or Electrical is preferred)
* 7 years of manufacturing, process, and/or validation engineering experience is required (10+ years is preferred).
* Demonstrated technical project management skills and experience (PMP/PMI certification, FPx certification, or equivalent preferred).
* Demonstrated Six Sigma / Process Excellence / LEAN skills and related tool usage (Belt Certification preferred).
* Significant experience in various assembly and production processes and related skills and technologies is preferred.
* Demonstrated ability to clearly and concisely communicate across multiple organizational levels and functions, directly and remotely, and across global cultures.
* Demonstrated people management skills through project management relationships.
* Experience in a production environment and experience in a regulated medical industry and all related competencies (e.g. GMP, compliance, processes, etc.) is preferred.
* Local and international travel up to 25% is possible.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
91,000 to 147,200

Additional Description for Pay Transparency The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan.
