What To Expect
Tesla Factory Design Engineering is looking for a Wastewater and Specialty Water Systems Design Engineer to join our Process Design team in Sparks, NV. The process design team strives to create the factory of the future by bringing conceptual designs to life, producing cutting-edge detailed designs of chemical and utility systems that are fully integrated with manufacturing processes. As a Wastewater Process Engineer, you will play a critical role in our efforts to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.

What You'll Do

  • Apply engineering fundamentals and a broad set of process engineering tools to solve technical problems and create novel detailed designs for Wastewater and Specialty Water systems such as wastewater, reverse osmosis water, deionized water systems, as well as associated treatment chemicals like sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide systems
  • Provide process engineering support to operations to help resolve process bottlenecks and other long-standing issues
  • Provide technical expertise to the engineering/design team and other groups within organization as a subject matter expect (SME); mentor other engineers & team members
  • Lead projects from front-end through detailed design and generate deliverables including: Scoping documents; Basis of Design reports; PFDs; P&IDs; Layouts; and 3D piping design
  • Generate process engineering calculations and documentation, including: Aspen simulation where required, pressure relief valve calculations, Pipe-Flo modeling, and pressure drop analysis
  • Develop Sequence of Operations / Controls Narrative documents; cause & effect matrices
  • Participate in field construction and commissioning activities by serving as the point of contact for technical questions and real-time issue resolution
  • Review process design work performed by others on the Process Team to ensure every design maintains the highest level of quality, including P&ID’s, plan drawings, and single line iso’s, review and/or update master piping and equipment specification


  • What You'll Bring

  • Degree in Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of experience in wastewater and specialty water systems Process Design, Process Improvement or Operations within a high-tech industry such as semiconductor, specialty chemical, solar, battery, etc. A combination of experience with an owner operator and an EPC firm is highly desired
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Nevada is required or the ability to obtain comity licensure within 6 months
  • Subject matter expertise related to OSHA requirements for hazardous systems and maintenance access, ASME pressure vessel and piping codes, NFPA codes (E.g. NFPA 30 and 55), and relevant building codes
  • Ability to lead or participate in reactive chemical process hazard evaluations and HAZOP reviews of PSM-covered and other hazardous chemical systems
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, and Pipe-Flo. Design engineers are not required to use Revit, but Revit experience is a plus
  • Working knowledge and experience with permitting of wastewater systems
  • Ability to adapt, multi-task and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment with evolving changes in design requirements
  • A positive attitude and ability to communicate with peers and stakeholders at all levels including piping designers, stress engineers, other engineering disciplines, customers, and executives
