Location: San Jose
As a Sr. Staff Engineer in the Test Hardware group, you will drive the research, development, and scale-up of the Test Equipment required to deliver Ayar Labs’ next generation products.
Responsibilities include interfacing with Product Development Engineers, Design Engineers, and Validation Engineers to create new test platforms that provide trustworthy data for our partners and customers. You will join a small team in a dynamic startup environment, where each member is able and expected to take on a wide range of assignments, and to learn and grow fast with the company.
Key Responsibilities
- Interface with internal customers and support test program solutions for silicon and III-V photonics based on Product Development and Validation requirements.
- Develop various testing platforms by selecting measurement hardware and optoelectronic devices, joining tester instruments, and writing reliable software to automate the test flow.
- Perform statistical analysis and data visualization to demonstrate the stability and capability of laser test platforms. Present and provide directional feedback based on this analysis to partners across the company.
- Test and validate product yield compliance with margin to specification across critical functional areas of the products.
- Determine tester configurations, including developing Module Technical Specs and meeting with vendors to customize advanced tester modules.
- Review tester technical specifications and interfaces for conformity to design guidelines and functionality.
- Work with the Data Engineering team to ensure that test results are well structured, validated, and flows smoothly into our internal database.
- Work with colleagues and vendors to design and source material handling tools, probe cards, adaptor boards, fixtures, burn-in racks and other key optomechanical collaterals.
- Work with and train the Operations team to optimize test flows and processes to enable volume manufacturing.
Basic Qualifications
- MS/PhD in Electrical Engineer, Computer Science or Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field and 5+ years of industry experience in laser physics, photonics, optics, optoelectronics and/or fiber optics
- Hands-on experience with optical and electrical laboratory bench equipment
- Experience in developing software for test automation
- Broad knowledge of assembly, packaging, alignment, powering, and test methodologies
- Able to analyze problems, perform statistical/data analysis, and apply corrective actions
- Strong organizational and planning skills
- Desire to work in a fast-paced environment
- Good written (white papers) and oral communication skills
- Able to work on-site in San Jose office
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing test platforms for semiconductor lasers or photonic devices
- Experience and knowledge in high-throughput tester development
- Experience in robotic material handling, computer vision, and control systems
- Experience and strong knowledge in instrument connection protocols
- Able to analyze and understand complex architecture, firmware, software, and hardware specifications
Salary Range: $160,000-$223,000
