The purpose of the Materials Engineering organization is to support Tesla's mission of accelerating the world toward sustainable energy by innovating novel materials and overseeing their implementation in all of Tesla's products. Additionally, Materials Engineering provides key materials expertise and problem-solving capabilities to support other internal functions.
This role contributes to this mission by leading the Polymers Engineering team. Leveraging a deep understanding of chemistry, physics, and polymer science, the team provides solutions to some of Tesla's most complex polymer-related challenges.
* Oversee individuals tasked with delivering multiple simultaneous Polymer-specific deliverables, applying first principles to launch products on time, with superior quality, at an agreeable cost, from conception through to production
* Manage deliverables, including novel materials innovations, developing materials selection tools, providing materials properties for internal customers, authoring materials standards, performing root-cause analysis, researching new technologies, and optimizing processes
* Lead a team of subject matter experts in Polymer science, fostering a culture of innovation and high performance
* Cultivate strong relationships and cross-functional collaboration by partnering with Design Engineering, Design Studio, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and other internal teams that rely on our expertise and guidance
* Coordinate with other Materials Engineering managers to ensure that the Polymer-specific workload is balanced across engineers located in other regions and teams
* Plan manpower needs, recruit top talent, drive continuous improvement and recognize exceptional employee performance
* Achieve results by setting priorities, communicating expectations, planning, and monitoring progress
* Communicate team progress and roadblocks broadly and cross-functionally
* Expertise in polymer engineering to solve complex challenges in areas such as paints, adhesives, thermoplastics, thermosets, textiles, trim, and related manufacturing processes
* Degree in Polymer or Materials Engineering, or equivalent experience with at least 7 years of engineering leadership experience. Automotive experience is preferred but not required
* Familiarity with lab tools (e.g., DSC, DMA), FEA software (e.g., LS-Dyna, Abaqus), and mold-filling simulation tools (e.g., Moldflow, Sigmasoft). Experience with material modeling and fitting material data into simulations to improve models and predictive simulations
* Proven ability to lead engineering teams, manage complex projects, and meet tight deadlines
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle competing demands
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly
* A proactive, positive, and resilient approach to work, with strong accountability for outcomes
