Job Title: Sr. Electrical Substation Testing & Commissioning Engineer

About The Role

As an Electrical Substation Equipment Testing and Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for the testing, commissioning, and maintenance of various substation equipment such as Current Transformers (CTs), Potential Transformers (PTs), Transformers, Breakers, and Isolators. Your role will involve ensuring these components are correctly installed, functioning as intended, and compliant with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct testing and commissioning of substation equipment, including CTs, PTs, Transformers, Breakers, and Isolators.
  • Analyze and interpret disturbance records and event logs using software like MICOM S1 Studio, DIGSI, and PCM for relays from manufacturers such as AREVA, SIEMENS, and ABB.
  • Perform transformer tests including Tan-Delta, Winding Resistance, Vector Group, Oil, Ratio, and Partial Discharge tests.
  • Execute reactor tests such as Tan Delta, Winding Resistance, Insulation Resistance, Oil, Partial Discharge, and Reactance Measurement tests.
  • Conduct CT & PT testing, including Winding Resistance, Insulation Resistance, Ratio, Polarity, and Primary Injection tests.
  • Manage substation operations at various voltage levels (220KV/33KV/6.6KV/415V) and oversee electrical distribution systems, audits, legal and safety meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Utilize software tools like Wavewin32, Micom S1 Agile, PCM 600, Archive Crawler, Archive Reporter, System Configuration Editor (SCE), System Maintenance Tool (SMT), Computer Maintenance Tool (CMT), and Omicron Test Universe for system configuration and maintenance.
  • Test voltage and power chords of protection relays, analyze faults, and report findings to clients.
  • Perform HT breaker operation, maintenance, servicing, troubleshooting, and testing for breakers such as 6.6KV SF6 & 6.6 KV VCB from Siemens, ABB, and Areva.
  • Plan and execute maintenance activities for breakers, VCBs, ACBs, capacitor banks, battery chargers, battery banks, and VFD panels.
  • Identify and troubleshoot malfunctions, replacing parts and components, and ensuring adherence to safety procedures.
  • Maintain good coordination and communication with team members and clients, and prepare reports, root cause analysis, and presentations.
  • Support the operation team with all erection, commissioning, testing, and maintenance-related issues.
  • Understand the operation of Current Control Units (CCU) used for WTI, OTI, and OLTC tap position reporting to SCADA.
  • Be familiar with 220kV switchyards, 33kV ABB GIS, and 33 kV/6.6 kV/415 V AIS substations, as well as Ethernet switches, fiber optic patch cables, coaxial cables, and TCP/IP rings.
  • Analyze fault causes and effects through disturbance records and event logs, preparing root cause analysis, and submitting reports to clients.
  • Protecting systems with line protection (distance relay), reactor protection, transformer protection, and bus bar protection.
  • Operating and troubleshooting relays from Siemens, Micom, GE, and ABB, using testing equipment like Omicron CPC 100, CPC 356, and CP TD 12/15, as well as relay testing with Omicron CMC 356 and Megger MPRT 8430.
  • Operating and maintaining transformers of various capacities (2 MVA, 2.5 MVA, 20 MVA, 27 MVA)
  • Knowledge of synchronism check parameters and tie protection, including Local Breaker Backup (LBB) and auto-recloser functions.

Technical Skills

  • Relay Testing: Expertise in MICOM S1 Studio, DIGSI, PCM, and extracting/analyzing disturbance records.
  • Transformer Testing: Proficiency in Tan-Delta, Winding Resistance, Vector Group, Oil, Ratio, and Partial Discharge tests.
  • Reactor Testing: Skilled in Tan Delta, Winding Resistance, Insulation Resistance, Oil, Partial Discharge, and Reactance Measurement tests.
  • CT & PT Testing: Competent in Winding Resistance, Insulation Resistance, Ratio, Polarity, and Primary Injection tests.
  • Software Tools: Proficient in Wavewin32, Micom S1 Agile, PCM 600, Archive Crawler, Archive Reporter, SCE, SMT, CMT, and Omicron Test Universe.
  • Protection Systems: Knowledgeable in line, reactor, transformer, and bus bar protection.
  • Relay Operation: Experience with Siemens, Micom, GE, and ABB relays, and testing with Omicron CPC 100, CPC 356, CP TD 12/15, and Megger MPRT 8430.
  • Breaker Maintenance: Expertise in HT breaker operation, 6.6KV SF6, 6.6KV VCB, and maintenance of various breakers and transformers.
  • Communication Systems: Understanding of Ethernet switches, fiber optic patch cables, coaxial cables, and TCP/IP rings.

Preferred Qualifications And Experience

  • Experience with substation equipment from Siemens, ABB, GE, and other leading manufacturers.
  • Strong understanding of electrical protection systems and substation automation.
  • Proficiency in using various testing instruments and software tools for substation equipment testing.

Job Qualification Criteria

  • 5+ years of experience in testing and commissioning substation equipment.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on turn-key projects for LV, MV, and HV systems, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance.
  • Conduct detailed site assessments, including technical and commercial evaluations.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure project alignment with client specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, including project plans, specifications, and reports.
  • Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning phases, ensuring adherence to timelines and quality standards.
  • Provide technical support and training to clients, ensuring successful handover and operation of substation equipment.
