Summary

SPEECH and LANGUAGE SPECIALIST (K-12) DEFINITION: To provide services for students who have speech, language and/or hearing handicaps. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: a. Participate in identification, evaluation, and placement of pupils as a member of the special education site-based team or IEP meeting. b. Establish the extent and severity of speech, language and hearing handicaps and make recommendations for enrollment to IEP team. c. Develop an IEP for pupils with speech, language and hearing deficits. d. Implement prescriptive programs, goals and objectives for language and speech therapy through scheduling of individual and/or group sessions. e. Provide language, speech and hearing therapy to pupils in regular and special class who meet criterion for service. f. Refer pupils, when indicated, to nurses, psychologists, and others for further evaluations related to their speech, language, and hearing needs g. Maintain appropriate files and records on each student, including Medi Cal. h. Confer with parents and professional staff members on student's progress. Consult with Student Study Team as appropriate. i. Attend staff and inservice meetings as required. j. Interpret the communicatively handicapped program to school personnel and the community. k. Provide inservice regarding language, speech and hearing to regular and special education staff. o. other duties as assigned. JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Child development; physiological aspects of speech and hearing; knowledge of state criteria for speech and hearing special education eligibility. Ability to: Assess students to clarify strengths and deficits in speech and hearing; communicate pupil's needs and program options in speech and hearing; provide interventions to remedy pupil's deficits. Experience: Student internship as a Speech and Language Specialist or in Severe Disorders of Language classes. Education/credential: Education/Requirements: Possesses or qualified for a valid California teaching credential application to subject area. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: State license in Speech Pathology, and Bilingual Biliterate ability in Spanish SUPERVISION: Works under the supervision of Administrative Personnel.
