Gavlak Elementary School Date Available: 02/06/2025 Closing Date: Until Filled Additional Information: Show/Hide TITLE: SPEECH CORRECTIONIST (THERAPIST) QUALIFICATIONS: * A Bachelor's Degree with a major in Speech. * A valid certificate to practice as a Speech Correctionist. * Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable within the framework of state requirements. REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Child Study Team/Principal SUPERVISES: * Eligible classified students in need of speech correction. * Other resource and service personnel while functioning in the assigned area. JOB GOAL: The Speech Therapist develops and implements an individualized speech diagnostic and therapy program with regard to delayed or defective speech, articulation, stuttering, hearing and voice for children in need of such help. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Administers a screening test to new entrants to the school system, in regular and special classes, and on all levels from pre kindergarten to twelfth grade. * Determines eligibility for speech correction services for pupils with mild speech articulation problems. * Classifies as "eligible for speech correction services" pupils with problems not severe enough to warrant comprehensive evaluations by the basic Child Study Team. * Develops an individualized speech education program in cooperation with parents and other appropriate personnel in accordance with the State rules. * Group students with speech, language and/or hearing disorders according to their needs on an individual or small group basis and determines the number of pupils and types of disorders to be included in the active case load covering the elementary schools and the junior/senior high school. * Works cooperatively with administrators and teachers in scheduling speech therapy sessions. * Develops an individualized speech program for each child on the active case load and provides the necessary direct therapy weekly in the area of speech, language and/or hearing on an individualized or small group basis. * Consults with parents to gain an understanding of the child's developmental background and to make suggestions to guide the parents in helping the child at home. * Consults with teachers to maintain a three way cooperative program between the home, the school and the therapist. * Maintains a check-up schedule for students released as corrected. * Provides a diagnostic testing of pre-school children at the request of the parents and provides an individualized therapy program for the parents to follow at home. As needed, provides parent counseling and periodic progress check-ups with these cases. * Maintains open line communications with all school personnel and pertinent outside professionals or agencies. * Gives speech improvement lessons in the classroom as required. * Maintains a daily progress record and case history for each child. * Prepares all necessary reports for the speech program. * Participates in Child Study Team meetings for students requiring speech therapy. * Attends school in-service meetings, professional association meetings, seminars, workshops, to keep current on all phases of speech therapy. * Performs other tasks, as assigned, which fall into the province of a speech teacher. Travel Requirements * Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. Qualifications Profile Certification/License: * NJ State Certification as a Speech Correction/Language Specialist * Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
