What You’ll Do

• Play a key role in elevating our client’s engineering team by implementing robust solutions, optimising development processes, and driving technical excellence across multiple teams.
• Architect, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems, ensuring they support the business’s growth and evolving technical needs.
• Lead the design and development of backend services, primarily using Python, but within a language agnostic environment that values the right tool for the job.
• Collaborate closely with other engineers, engineering leaders and cross functional teams to establish best practices, improve system reliability, and streamline workflows.
• Advocate for high quality software engineering by introducing and refining processes around engineering, architecture, automation, and continuous integration/deployment.
• Take ownership of backend infrastructure, ensuring services are well architected, maintainable, and performant.
• Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting to enhance system observability and proactively address issues before they impact users.
• Work with containerisation and orchestration tools to deploy and manage services effectively.
• Contribute to strategic technical decisions, guiding the business through complex challenges and shaping the future of its engineering landscape.

What They’re Looking For

• Extensive backend development experience, with strong expertise in Python (or a willingness to work with it) in a language agnostic environment.
• Proven track record in architecting scalable and maintainable backend systems, with a deep understanding of system design and distributed computing principles.
• Strong experience with API design, microservices architecture, and event driven systems.
• Proficiency in working with databases, including PostgreSQL, Redis, and other relevant data storage solutions.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar).
• Solid understanding of containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Ability to introduce and refine engineering processes to improve efficiency, collaboration, and code quality.
• A mindset geared towards automation, continuous integration, and deployment best practices.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and clearly convey complex technical concepts.
• Experience mentoring engineers and driving technical excellence within a team.
• A pragmatic approach to problem solving, balancing technical innovation with business needs.
• Ability to work both autonomously and across multiple teams

Flexible Work Environment

While this role requires 4 days a week in the office, the client understands that flexibility is key. There is operational flexibility around working hours, and if occasionally additional home working days are needed on a case by case basis, they will be reviewed accordingly.
