Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and motivated professional to work as a software engineer developing enterprise level back-end systems at FamilySearch.org. This role will be supporting a large scale s3 service that currently stores over 5 billion records and supports the FamilySearch records infrastructure.

Our engineering teams work in an agile development environment to develop and deliver world-class applications and systems. These backend systems serve up records that can be viewed and edited by patrons around the world. Our typical backend systems are created in Java, supported by large databases, and hosted in the Cloud (AWS).

We need software engineers who are excited and passionate about leveraging innovative technologies and contributing their talents to the work of the Church in Family History.

The Software Development Engineer 4 is a seasoned professional, lead role responsible for developing technical designs and developing and maintaining software source code to support a solution. As an experienced member of a development team, the individual will be expected to solve complex technical issues and programming tasks. The individual may be asked to act as a technical lead on projects or solutions with moderate complexity or scope. This is an individual contributor role.

This individual works with divine guidance to provide or support technology that furthers the mission of the Church and reflects the eternal impact of the gospel.

Responsibilities

80% Assigned software development tasks - Designing, developing, and testing new or existing software.

10% Working as a member of a software engineering team participating in team meetings, team planning sessions, setting team goals, and all other team activities.

10% Self-directed, or classroom instruction, in the areas of Church software development processes, industry best practices, and new technologies being adopted by their current organization

Contribute to and perform analysis of functional requirements

Participate in vendor or technology evaluations and identify critical gaps in their offerings

Participate in the formulation of technical recommendations

Act as a technical lead and, if assigned, mentor peers

Create technical designs mapped to functional requirements

Provide estimates for development tasks

Design, develop, and test code for software development projects

Participate in code reviews

Develop technical documentation

Participate in the Incident Management process and fix defects on a 24/7 basis

Contribute to the design, and implementation, and measures required to protect solutions from security compromise

Comply with policies, standards, and regulatory requirements and ensure all others are doing the same

Document new technical knowledge and train others on emerging needs and technologies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent professional experience
  • Six years of progressive relevant professional experience
  • Strong understanding of Agile Software Development methodologies and principles
  • Solid base of learning and some experience in all the primary areas of an n-tier enterprise system that may or may not be web based (e.g., interface domain logic and database layers)
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to mentor and train peers
  • Exceptional troubleshooter with the ability to solve problems in a timely manner under pressure
  • Strong skills in engineering/programming, analytical/diagnostic/troubleshooting, web technology, and programming methodology
  • Solid understanding of systems and subsystems
  • Familiarity with Cloud Based Platforms and services
  • Strong understanding of DevSecOps
  • Strong understanding of Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable software, computer languages, and code to perform the responsibilities of this role
  • Proven aptitude and willingness to learn new technologies and programming languages
  • This job operates in a professional environment
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of the job there may be physical requirements which need to be met such as sitting for long periods of time and using computer monitors/equipment

Preferred

  • Strong full-stack skills in engineering/troubleshooting, web technology, architectures, and/or programming methodology
  • Spring, Spring Boot
  • SQL and NoSQL Databases with Postgres experience a plus
  • AWS S3, SQS
  • Message Queuing, Data Streaming services Significant, demonstrated programming experience in an OO language: for example, Java, C#, C++, etc.
    • While not required, experience with multiple Java APIs and frameworks is a plus.
  • RESTful web services
  • Understanding of web infrastructure, architecture and technologies including:
    • Web Servers
    • Application Servers
    • Networking
  • Solid understanding of XML, JSON, Etc.
  • Ability to work well in an agile development environment
  • Strong testing mindset, including unit testing and Test-Driven Development
  • Strong work ethic not only as an individual, but also as a collaborating team member
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and apply professional judgement
