Job Title: Freelance Software Architect –

Location: Hybrid (Netherlands-based preferred)

Contract Duration: 12 months

We are seeking a highly skilled freelance Software Architect with a strong background in systems and C or C++ development to join a long-term project within the defense and space sector. This is a high-impact role where you will help shape the architecture of mission-critical software used in advanced aerospace and defense applications.

Responsibilities:

• Design and define robust, scalable software architecture.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure software solutions align with hardware capabilities
• Lead architectural decisions and review code to ensure quality and performance standards
• Interface with stakeholders to understand system requirements and translate them into technical specifications
• Guide development teams and provide technical leadership throughout the development lifecycle
• Contribute to documentation and ensure compliance with industry and security standards

Requirements:

• Proven experience as a Software Architect or Senior Software Engineer
• Strong proficiency in C or C++
• Experience working with microcontrollers and low-level hardware-software integration
• Background in the defense or space industry
• Familiarity with industry safety and security standards (e.g., DO-178, ECSS, MISRA)
• Solid understanding of real-time systems and performance optimization
• English only is required!

Bonus:

• Experience with Rust programming language
• Knowledge of formal methods or model-based design
