About the Department:
Development and External Affairs (DEA) supports SMU by securing funding for University priorities; by promoting meaningful involvement in the life and work of the University; by heightening international, national, state and local awareness of SMU; and by supporting the enrollment of a diverse and able student body.
DEA comprises the offices of Office of the Senior Vice President, Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, Development Services, Program Services and Donor Relations, Marketing and Communications, Principal and Major Gifts, and School and Project Development.

About the Position:
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
Social Media platforms and the way content is created continues to change at a rapid pace. We're looking for a social media manager who can internalize SMU's brand voice, adapt to ever-evolving trends and be accountable for content creation, social listening, analytics, social community management, and contributing to the organic and paid social media strategy for SMU's flagship platforms and partners across campus. Our ideal candidate is an engaging storyteller who understands how to create content tailored to different platforms and audiences.
This position reports to the Associate Director of Social Media and supports SMU's marketing plan in alignment with Development and External Affairs goals and the University's strategic plan.
Essential Functions:
* Concept, create, and manage content on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, YouTube and other media/websites. This includes shooting video on a phone or DSLR camera, editing video in-app or on Adobe Premiere, publishing content, assisting with executing paid social strategy, and working with students, interns, faculty, staff and others to create and/or curate content.
* Social community management: regularly listen, monitor and respond as appropriate to SMU-related discussions on our platforms. Assist social media efforts during a crisis, working closely with the media and university relations team.
* Incorporate insights from analytics manager. Coordinate with marketing team, schools and units to conceptualize ideas for innovative social media projects and campaigns that actively engage key audiences (alumni, students, prospective students, parents, influencers, etc.).
* Assist in managing a team of undergraduate and graduate interns on content creation and social media management. Other duties as assigned.
* Occasional evening and/or weekend working hours are required.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree is required. A degree in Digital Media or Communications is preferred.
A minimum of two years of work experience managing social media channels is required.
Experience developing and implementing organic and paid social strategies to effectively engage audiences is also required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to build strong relationships with administrators, faculty members, students & staff, to generate story ideas for social media channels. Strong writing skills with the ability to produce error-free communications, as well strong editing and proofreading skills are required. Strong presentation skills are essential.
Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time-management skills with the ability to proactively manage multiple priorities and stakeholders. Must also demonstrate a strong attention to detail. Strong creative and project management experience is essential.
Candidate must understand the differences between platforms and tailoring content strategies accordingly. Must also be able to extrapolate and incorporate analytical insights.
Candidate must possess strong problem solving skills with the ability to be resourceful, proactive and seek assistance as needed. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team is essential.
Candidate must have the ability to shoot and edit photos and videos. A strong proficiency with Adobe Photoshop and Premiere is required. A working knowledge of and/or experience with After Effects or other Adobe software is preferred. Experience with graphic design, desired.
