Summary

Position Summary: The Gillespie Center is a 15-bed emergency shelter for single men and Hoskins Place for single women 4-beds, located at 45 Jesup Road, Westport, CT. It is a program of Homes with Hope, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to ending homelessness in Fairfield County. The Shift Supervisor plays a crucial role in the shelter's operation primarily during non-business hours, from 4 pm to midnight. This hourly position reports to the Program Director.

Responsibilities

  • Shelter Operation: Ensure the shelter operates smoothly according to established day-to-day practices and policies.
  • Client Support: Provide residential support to clients, including completing written intakes, orienting new clients to the program, and overall compliance with the Gillespie Center/Hoskins Place shelter expectations, as needed.
  • Facility Management: Maintain the shelter's sanitary and safe conditions, coordinate with the Program Director and Property Manager for maintenance needs, and alert property management when necessary.
  • Volunteer Management: Supervise the nightly dinner service provided by volunteers from the Community Kitchen.
  • Administrative Duties: Handle various administrative tasks such as documenting in-kind donations, maintaining electronic records, daily log entries, and overseeing office/program/maintenance supplies.
  • Training: Complete required training or certifications in areas such as Adult CPR and Basic First Aid, Confidentiality, Universal Precautions, Ethical Behavior, De-escalation, and other relevant topics.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of experience in residential programs.
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse population.
  • High professional and ethical standards when working with vulnerable individuals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Proficiency in using computers, Microsoft Office (including Outlook), HMIS software, and internet research.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
  • Strong conflict resolution and crisis management skills.
  • Ability to interact with the public and focus on people and results.
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus.
  • Minimum education requirement: High school diploma or equivalent.
